There has some controversey here. What color does the 9n gas tank get painted or is it acceptable as bare metal.

The Petersen & Beemer Book (Ford N Series Originality Guide) lists the gas tank as being cadmium plated. I believe this was another name for what we call galvanizing. Most paint stores will sell a product called 'Cold Galvanizing Compound'. This is not a shiny bright finish but is more a dull lighter gray than the normal 9N color. It should be gas and corrosive resistant like David said (should you spill gas and it gets under the hood where you can't wipe it off).

BTW the book also notes the wire tube that runs along the top of the engine being 'cadmium plated' also.

Just my opinion from my experiences, yours may vary.

The tank was cadmium plated steel. Kind of a gray-black in appearance. The paints of the day could not tolerate the occassional gas spill, so rather than have have the paint get washed off the tank and run onto the engine, they cad plated the tank to forestall corrosion, and left the paint off.

Modern epoxies and urethanes can resist gasoline much better. You can paint it to match the hood or the engine.

Alternatively, Eastwood sells a "Cad plated look-alike" paint, if you want to touch up the tank and retain that factory original look.

It is desirable to retain the cad plating, rather than sandblasting it off to bright metal, should you plan to paint it.
