I'm getting an estimate on rebuilding my 2n engine. They said they will have the head shaved if needed and do a lower rebuild. They will inspect the valves to make sure they are in good shape, but if not broke, will leave them as they are. Any ideas as to what I should expect to pay? Is it a good idea not to do the valves if they are in good shape? Thanks in advance. Rob

I just got throughwith an "inframe " overhaul of an 8-N. The sleeves were in good shape, the compression rings were first class, but, the oil rings were worn out. His son-in-law says the man didn't see much need in changing oil but every couple of years no more than he used it. Got so he changed it every time he used it. Crank was perfect, valves were good. Overhaul gaskets, rod bearings and rings came to $144.00. Over the many years, I have found that in addition to spraying WD-40 on top of the valves to see if they leak, you need to shake them to check for play in the valve guies. If they aren't fairly snug, you will notice tha when you bump the engine over with the starter, thevalve will be cocked "just a mite" before it seats. This allows the piston to be a good ways up on the compression stroke before compression starts building. It cuts the power, but, does not exhibit a miss. It makes it HARD to start. The head normally does not need shaving

I just had a chat with a small tractor shop that is also a New Holland dealer. They said they would do the things you said, only with more attention to the valves and also replace/rebuild the water pump. The quote was about $1600. They estimated $700 for parts. I thought that was high. They also said that it often costs less depending on what machining need to be subed out (crank, head, block surface).

I did a pretty comprehensive engine rebuild on my 8N about two years ago. I did most of the mechanic work myself. The complete engine parts kit was about $500. The machine shop work was about $200. Miscellaneous parts were probably $150.

Some prefer a complete remanufactured engine… its your call.

I agree with Joel about doing as much as you can yourself so you know what goes into the rebuild.

If you are going through the trouble of removing the engine from the tractor, I would do a complete rebuild if you can afford it and plan on keeping the tractor. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

I just had the shop lap the valves and seats. I did my own rebuild... Personally, doing it yourself gives you a better idea of what goes on inside if and when something goes wrong.

My total machine shop cost was about $250... Sleeves R&R'd, valve lap, R&R 5 broken studs, milled head.
