Is there anything that I can do to save my tank? The rust is located in the interior of the tank. What do ya'll advice?

I just replaced the gas tank when I had a problem with rust in the 8N.

No offense to others who saved their gas tanks. I admire their work ethic.

However, I just don't have the time or the patience to fiddle fart around trying to save a part that I can replace in less time than it takes to try to save it for about $112 for the new part.

I guess I'm just that way. When I see a part that's probably original and thoroughly beat to snot and rotted through pretty much with rust, I just don't want to give myself further grief everytime I have to empty crap out of the bowl and try to get the tractor running. I want my tractors to be as reliable as they can be, given their age. These tractors need enough fiddle farting around to keep them running without making things worse by not replacing parts that should be replaced.

By replacing the gas tank I eliminate one more variable. The fewer variables to check out when there's a problem the better, to me.

Just my opinion. Am I being wasteful by replacing the gas tank?

I used the kit that Eastwood sells. It took about 3 hours to go through each step but the tank came out as shiny as new. You then pour in the finish coating and it makes the inside look like the inside of a Coleman cooler. After a while, it turns kinda amber looking from the gas, but no rust and no fuel problems.

I used the Eastwood treatment too, but I must say it took me a bit more than 3 hours - more like six. Course I was busy doing other things too.

Three years and no rust or leaks.

N - joy.

I took my gas tank to a radiator shop, they boiled it out and put a sealer inside. Cost about $50. Good Luck

I used a POR15 kit to remove varnish and rust from my 8N tank. Then I sealed it with the sealer that came in the kit. Cost about $50. I shook 3 lbs. of 1/4" nuts around in the tank to loosen the rust. Now, my tank looks brand new on the inside. Check their web site out. www.por15.com/information.html

Rob:
Do not know how bad your rust problems is. When I first got my 8N I was able to pour about a cup of rust flakes out of the empty tank after removing it from the tractor. I rinsed it with gas a few times and then re-installed it. I then filled the tank about half full and drained about a gallon or so. Most of the remaining rust came out. I hooked the gas line up and proceeded to use the tractor. Any remaining rust collected in the sediment bowl which I cleaned one or two times. I now have no problems with rust. Hope this helps.

I suspended mine between 2 trees on ropes, filled it partially full of abraisive gravel and POR 15 cleaner degreaser, then shook (agitated) it for several hours. Repeated the process several times. That got rid of most of the interior rust.

You can finish up with products specially made to seal in the rust and coat the inside of the tank. POR 15 has a product, but it is quite expensive.
