Can someone tell me how the cylinders are numbered, and what the firing order is on a 1950 8n serial #283937* (side mount distributor)..For instance are they ordered from front to back 1-4-2-3? Also, is the coil supposed to be attached to one of the head bolts? it seems that this would cause that bolt to be improperly torqued. Thanks in advance for your help.

Rob..... ..Cylinder numbering is 1,2,3,4, front to back. Firing order sidemount 8N is 1,2,4,3, CCW. Which is how your sparkies are suppost to be plugged into top of the distributor cap. OK? You do understand CCW means Counter Clock Wise, don't you?

My 52 8N ignition coil is held on to the right front corner of the cylinderhead by 2-bolts in an "upright" position. It is NOT held on by any of the 18 cylinderhead bolts. But there is a sparkie wire holder that is cylinderhead bolted.

The earlier frontmount 8N has sparkplug tube bolted to cylinderhead bolts. The right side generator tensioning bracket is held on by 2 cylinderhead bolts.

This is all verified by assembly drawings in the N-Ford Master Parts Catalog. (MPC)

There is NOTHING wrong with using cylinderhead bolts to hold things, just correctly torque the headbolts to 70 ft/lbs, or studnuts 55 ft/lbs. Headbolts are now the prefered method of cylinderhead attachment. Infact, the N-Ford MPC doesn't even list the studnuts anymore..... ....Dell

Thanks Dell! Your input is always helpful, I may figure out why this thing won't start yet!
