My neighbor told me that you can put a hydraulic pump on the crank pulley of any tractor for use with a front end loader/pitch fork/scoop...etc.
Is this true? Specifically, is this true for an 8n ford?

Rob, Yes you can install a loader or a pump to run off the front of your N model. BUT you first have to get the parts. You will need a new front pulley for your engine. The new pulley will have four holes on about a (roughly) three inch bolt circle. Next you will need the driveshaft for the pump. This is a 3/4" dia shaft that goes thru the crank hole to the front of the engine. This driveshaft has a (roughly) four inch dia. flange on the end. This flange has four pins/lugs that engage with the holes in the pulley. The pulleys are still available for about forty bucks, The shafts? Maybe. This shaft is sometimes called the "stinger". Once you have torn your front end apart to install it, You won't want to remove it even if you do take the loader off the machine. It's just too much work. Another point about loaders on these machines is that Ford sent them out with 16" tires, not the normal 19" tires. One look at the bearing surface on the ground and a estimate of the weight with a full bucket and you'll see the need for the wider 16" tires. Good luck with it Rich

I have some photos and specs on the pump/shaft setup that you need here. It's over on the tractor page.

Neighbor is correct. Lots of N's with loaders out there. I have a 2N with a Wagner loader on it and I'm really happy with it. A full bucket makes you appreciate your growing arm muscles (no power steering on the N).

Lots of good stuff available via classifieds and Ebay. you should be able to get one for ~ $700-$1000. Get one with a hyd. cyl. on the bucket if you can.

Good Luck
