Just wondering, does any ony use a 5' bush hog without a sherman tranny? My 9 has a step down but this 2N dosen't. I can't seem to get the results I want unless I'm in the step down mode. Just curious. Rob

I have a 2N & 5' Howze hog and I go in 2nd gear, full throttle. I'm not mowing a wide open field, I have to go arround trees & stuff and have a hill to climb, but I don't have any problem. 3rd gear is too fast for my personal comfort zone.

I have a 2N with Sherman Step-up and the 5' Howse bush hog. I can run in 1st gear High or 2nd Gear Low no problem. Higher gear than that just seems too fast to me.

My 8n has been hogging the saplings in the woods on my property ( up to 2" ) in first gear at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle numerous times and does ok. No sherman in mine.

It may be slow to get moving but once spinning it should work fine. I cut heavy stuff in 1st gear and tall grass in 2nd. Always at 3/4 throttle.

Good Luck!

I use a 9N no step down with a 5 foot hog. I have had no real problems cutting through grass sometimes higher than the tractor in second gear as long as the grass is fairly dry. Now I do have a patch of what looks like a wild wheat, and some areas of clover that will bog the tractor down pretty good. I just take have swipes through those sections in first gear if needed. You may have a worn out engine on the tractor, might want to do a compression check to see where you are at.

Hi Rob9N. I also have a 9N and use a 5' Brush Hog. Don't have any problem with it in any gear. I have a Sherman but it's only the step up. You may have a problem with your brush hog. Take a look at the blades. When was the last time they were sharpened? Makes a big difference. Is your B.Hog gear box OK? Do you have the B. Hog adjusted properly on the back of your tractor? I cut food plots, sometimes the stuff is 3-4 ft. high and pretty thick. Is your tractor engine working OK? Post again and let us know. Good Luck. Ron

Assuming you have your minimum and maximum engine rpm's setup correctly and throttle positioning working correctly.....here's the numbers:

stepdown 1st - Full Throttle - 2.69mph/545 pto rpm
stepdown 2nd - Full Throttle - 3.40mph/545 pto rpm
standard 1st - 3/4 Throttle - 2.69mph/545 pto rpm
standard 2nd - 3/4 Throtle - 3.40mph.545 pto rpm

As you can see, regardless of the gear selection and Sherman setting, the only thing that changes is the engine rpm (throttle setting). If you are having power problems due to heavy shredding, choosing the stepdown 1st/full throttle will work best. Without the sherman, standard 1st/full throttle results in a pto rpm of 825.....much too high for standard shredder equipment. Unless your shredder is so rated I would try to avoid any long term use of this high rpm.

Just a thought, if you are stepping down with a sherman, then you are also cutting the PTO rpms and the brush mower would operate slower. Perhaps you need to set the mower a little higher?

I have been cutting for years with a 5 ft. brush hog and it cuts great. I have no Sherman. With sharp blades I can lower the mower real low and it will cut the yard better then my Craftsman riding tractor (JUNK)
What type of brush hog do you have and what don't you like?

Most of us 8N people hog in 1st as 2nd seems to be a weak gear. I know you 9/2 N people have a 3spd tranny... How much difference in ground speed is the 9/2 n tranny in first than the 8n tranny in 1st.. both at 540 rpm mark ( or so... again.. I know not many 9/2 N's have been converted for a tach, etc...

Rob,

I use one and I don't have a Sherman. I'm happy with the way it works...usually running in second gear. What does yours fail to do?

Perhaps I have a step up sherman.I know that in the lower sherman gear, I have a slower but consistant PTO. If I put it on high, it tends to bog down and get choked easily. Also, just trying to climb a hill is impossible in the higher gear. That's not using the bush hog. If I put it in the low gear, I can climb it the no problem. It is quite a steep hill. Blades are one year old and the bush hog brand is Howse. Any one know what type Sherman? Thanks Rob

Hi Rob. It does sound like you have the same as mine a step up. I don't use it much with the Hog, except sometimes I want to step up the low gear when Hogging. Sounds like your's is working just the way it should. In high gear in step up you have very little power and have to either shift down or build up a lot of speed before climbing hills. I use the step up a lot when plowing snow. Gives me the speed in any gear I need to roll the snow either when using the back (grader) blade or the new front mount Dearborn I just put on. Sounds like your OK and your Hog is OK. Just use the proper gears when cutting and enjoy the ride on your 9N. A little more experience in the different types of grasses and terrain will provide you with the answers. Don't try to go fast and they are dangerous as is anything having to do with your tractor. I have repaired my neighbors Hog and his gate a few times, mainly caused by trying to go too fast. Good Luck. Ron
