My 1950 8n's hydraulics are starting to go bad....I think. I have a 4 foot brush hog that will not stay up. It will stay up with the PTO off for less than a minute..I'd say about 30 seconds. Does that mean that my hydraulics are oing bad? It will still pick up the Brush Hog just fine, just won't keep it up, even with the draft control on. If you guys think that this all adds up to a hydraulic overhaul, is there a site I can check out that will have a diagram so I can get an idea of what it takes to break the hydraulics down, and fix? Thanks in advance for all your help!!

i had the same problem with the good lift, but dropps after 30 sec. i just opened the side inspection cover (one with dip stick)and turned on my pto and tried to lift somethin if you see alot of fluid dripping fron the top youre in trouble, but of there is a slow dripping at the start of the lifting its fine. i saw swirls in the fluid below so that ment my safety relif valve was leaking. you can get one for about$20 and replace it.

hope i helped John

I read here that some of the newer FO - 4 manuals include the Master Parts Catalog 1939 - 1953. If your FO - 4 doesn't have it, I recommend you get a copy. It has a lot of exploded diagrams that can be real helpful.

Sounds like the cylinder needs new rings - get the new NAA cylinder with the rubber 'O' ring and backup leather (or rubber) washer.

N - joy.

Ha Rob, Sounds like you have the same problem I got, you've hydraulic cilinder is leaking, but your pump is ok.I recomind getting a copy of the FO-4 service manual, about $30 and worth every penny if you're fixin' your N yourself. The cilinder is just under the seat and is pretty easy to acsess and repair.
