My 1950/ 8N is either experiencing clutch slippage or governor hesitation / problems when put to heavy work load. It is most apparent when in reverse gear and trying to back up a steep hill. I rebuilt the governor last season, and the linkage seems to respond to the throttle being increased and decreased. The problem is much greater when the machine is cold and disengaging the PTO seems to allow more power to the axel. I am going to perform a compression test this afternoon. The engine sounds strong, starts alright and burns no oil. I replaced the valves and timing gear last winter. We have 2 feet of snow on our 550 ft. drive right now,and the old girl doesn't seem up to the task. Any suggestions on field testing the problem.

Need just alittle more info, when you say "It is most apparent when in reverse gear and trying to back up a steep hill", what do you mean?, is the tractor stalling? or does the tractor just stop moveing with the tractor in gear and motor running?(Clutch slipping)

Or is the clutch "Grabbing" because it's "Sticky" which stalls the tractor before it has a chance to start moveing?

later,dave

I guess that you answered my question Dave. Clutch is slipping. I guess that I'll have to make sure that the rear rope seal isn't leaking oil on the clutch. I've had the tractor for 15 years, so I suspect that a new clutch is in order. Never replaced one before, but if I have any mechanical questions, I know where to come to. Thanks!

Barry: Do you have any free play when you press down on the clutch? There should be about one inch of light pressure before you start to engage the clutch. If not, it should just take a simple adjustment.
