Rotor breaking

I replaced the distributer cap, rotor, condenser, points on my 8n. I have broken four new rotors (Bakelite shatters)after this change. It seems the contact on the rotor is hitting the spark plug buttons on the distributer. There are contact marks on the spark plug buttons.
There is no play in the distributer shaft.
Has any one experienced this.

I know from personal experience that it is very easy to press the rotor on, with about the same force you'd use for many kinds of cars, think you've got it in place, and find that it hits the distributor cap. With the clip, and a new rotor, the rotor can be a very tight fit on the shaft, tighter than what you may have worked on in the past.

The best bet to check things out is to remove one of the coil wires (so the tractor can't start) and spin the engine with the starter. See if the distributor cap rocks back and forth as the engine goes around. If it does, the rotor is hitting the cap. That's how I found my rotor was not pushed down all the way.

With your chronic problems, you could take this a step further. Remove the distributor entirely from the engine, assemble the rotor and cap, and spin the drive gear with your fingers. You should be able to feel the cam open and close the points, but should not feel any dragging or grinding from the rotor interfering with the cap.

One question, does the 8N have the same little rotor clip that the Jubilee has. I know I had a smiliar problem until I went to My friendly New Holland parts guy and he showed me the small clip. It cost 0ver three dollars but it made all the difference in the world for me.

Yep, the side mount 8N uses clip # 12213, same as the Jub. The clip maintains the rotational integrity of the rotor and should have no effect on his breakage. Spring tension on the rotor itself should keep the rotor from contacting the dist. cap. I've seen Jubs and late Ns run without clip 12213 and cap and rotor breakage was not a problem. ray

Common problem on front distributors with worn axle bushing and or pin. It allows the axle to contact the dist cap. ray

try pushing the rotor a little bit further down the shaft.

I should have noted that it is a side mount distributer

Bill..... ....lets see now..... .you've said you replaced your sidemount distributor cap in a tune-up and since then you've broken 4 distributor rotors. Do you see any commonallity there? 1-cap, 4 rotors?

2nd rotor would have taught you to be certain that the rotor is seated in the distributor shaft notch. 3rd rotor definately make certain the distributor shaft has no end play and the rotor is in the notch. 4th rotor, you're eather a slow learner.....or..... you've got an incorrect distributor cap. Do I have to tell you to get a new distributor cap?..... ....respectfully, Dell

UhDell,

As you now have learned, the side mount 8n and the Naa, and hundred series dists. use a "Spring clip" under the rotor , this spring clip is of a poor design(You know how some engineers are when designing stuff ) and the said "Clip" will sometimes fly off when serviceing the points, cap and such, this has nothing to do with ones "intelligence" !

It's a design flaw from some self centered engineer that us "Working" people have to deal with !
