I did a little light bush hogging today. After I was finished, the amp meter started going crazy. I was wildly ticking back and forth from center to buried all the way negative. I figured it was a no brainer that something was shorted out. This hypothesis was backed by a good supply of smoke comming from the main harness. The wire that goes from the gen to the voltage regulator was completly burned, as well as a majority of the wires next to it. So this is where I am now. I suppose that I need to do a complete re-wire and replace the voltage regulator. I am concerned that I do not know what caused this meltdown. Both the Voltage regulator and the generator were very hot to the touch. I know the genny can be kinda costly, but voltage regulators are fairly inexpensive, which I have elected to replace that first. Could the voltage regulator have failed in a way that cause such a meltdown, or is this most likely the result of 50+ years of decayed wiring? It also baffles me that there are no fuses in this thing. I suppose I could rig up some inline fuses, but what kind? How many amps and so forth. Oops, I forgot to tell ya'll that this is still a six volt system with a sidemount distributor. I am gonna need a lot of help on this repair, so please be patient with me. I appreciate any suggestions and comments! thanks in advance---Rob
P.S. On a lighter note, I bought three new calves today. 300 lbs a piece. Hopefully they will bring some money in the fall, when they get big and fat!

for big fuses ..... ..... .now nobody laugh at me, you can get some big monster purty ones at the local thump thump car stereo dealer. 50A, 100A all kinds of sizes. I'm using a 50A for my future 9N generator upgrade, figger it will prevent shorts, and be easier to change than a fusuble like. just gotta find a spot for it . Bad news though, it's all gold and shiny and new looking, so i'm gonna hafta primer it up or somethin, so nobody laughs.

Good luck on the re-wire. As for fuses, the big genny is rated at 20 amps, while the little genny is rated at 11 amps. I think I would use a 15 amp fuse on the little genny.. and a 25 on the big one...
Unless you've had it re-wound for higher output. I think I heard JimCox talk of a 30 amp job he made...

I'm glad you mentioned the size fuse. Something Ford forgot about? Going to put one in tomorrow. I wouldn't like to BBQ over my tractor wiring.

I had a similar expieriance today. I forgot to strap the battery down after r & r the vreg. The battery got up against the hood. The + terminal stopped it from slidding out. It died,I heard sparks and seen smoke, quickly turned it off and watched the + cable fall out to the side. The top cable clamp stuck to the hood, the lead end was on the battery, and melted lead lay on top of the battery. Had another cable end in the tool box and was back to hoggin' in 5 minutes. Nothing hurt that wasn't already bad. It isn't charging, but it wasn't charging before. I had unstuck the contacts in the vreg when I had it out earlier. It was the reason the battery was draining. I don't think it was charging right after I filed the contacts. Guess I'll be buying a new vreg. Counting my blessings on the possible BBQ'd N. DON'T FORGET TO TIE DOWN THE BATTERY!(%^)
