The main harness on my 1950 sidemount 8n melted down yesterday. The wire from the voltage regulator to the gen seems to be where the majority of the heat was, as well as the worst burned wire. The voltage regulator was hot, as well as the gen. Would failure in either of these two components cause the BBQ'd wire? Or in ya'll's opinion was this the product of decayed wires that became grounded?

Bob..... ....while I've never heard of a voltage regulator shorting out internally, anything is possible. Don't mucka round. Replace it. Don't chance it. Same with wires, NEW wiring harness, $15 cheap. Have your generator checked out by an old fashoned auto electrical shop 'cuz a "failed" brush could be your "short"..... ...Dell
