Not my motor but a small Yanmar just like it, 2GM Yanmar 1983 13hp. was running fine at 1800 revs and quit. Was low on fuel so owner added more. I went down to the boat today and bled the pump system, fuel at the last filter, good pressure from the pump. Can not check compression, no crank handle but it does have some compression. White puffs of smoke come out the air filter when trying to start. I thought about cam timing out of whack or stuck valves but that would be highly unlikely. I think he has a blown head gasket. Any thoughts please. Thank you. Welcome back Dell BC Mike C

When my daughters VW rabbit ran dry, I filled the pump with kerosene to prime. The kerosene fires a lot better than desiel fuel and gets the engine going again.

Remove the valve cover and see if the valves are moving. If not then you do have cam problems and probably valve problems too now since the pistons will hit the valves when the cam quits turning.

White smoke backing out from the air intake is a sure sign the cam is out of time. No other problem will cause this to happen.

Judging from my Massey Ferguson 205 (aka Hinomoto 18D) the little two cylinder Japanese diesels are really, really hard to reprime if you run them out of fuel. If you haven't done so already, disconnect the fuel plumbing to one injector nozzle, and verify that you get spurts of fuel all the way to the nozzle as you crank the engine over.

If it's a Kiki Diesel injector pump, there's a fitting you loosen on the side of the pump to bleed the injector pump itself. You can have fuel all the way to the pump, yet spend hours of useless cranking wondering why it won't start if you don't do this.
