HAVE A 1949 8N (FRONT MOUNT DIST) THAT WILL PULL START EASY BUT WON'T START ON ITS OWN. NEW PLUGS, CHECKED GAP ON POINTS. TIMING IS ON. CHECKED SPARK AND SEEMS TO GET GOOD SPARK. CLEANED CARB AND ITS GETTING GAS. MY MECH SEEMS TO THINK THAT COMPRESSION IS THE ONLY THING LEFT. HE THINKS THAT ITS TO LOW TO PULL THE GAS FROM THE CARB. LOOKIN FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS. DELL ARE YOU THERE

Check your compression to confirm/rule out valve or ring problems before you throw more parts at it.

Here are the compression readings for my 2N.
It cranks and runs good.
Fires right up with just a little choke when cold.
Even better once warned.
Does smoke real bad though.
It is on a 12V battery.
1..... 61
2..... 40
3..... 52 4..... 52 I think maybe your starter is dragging or you aren't getting the volts to the starter. Check your cables.

Very nice work Tyler. If you are doing others, you might consider the Naa as well. I espically like the photos included in the line drawings. It sure makes it eaiser to understand. Again you do nice work. Don

When I first got my 50 8n it was tired iron, it wouldn't spin fast enough on 6 volts to "sucky's the gases inna da motor, one quick 12 volt convertion later and "Bingo" , postponed a engine rebuild for another year til I won the Lotto (Ya, I wish )

Now that's a 12 volt conversion for all the right reasons!!!

LOL

Bill..... ....listen to your mechanic. When you "pull start", you spin your engine much faster than the starter ever could. This is called "dynamic compression". Fast spin sucks in more carb gas and gives ya a chance to getter started and runnin'. No amount of fiddlein' with sparkies or carb is gonna take the place of real compression. Hows power, enuff? Burn alotta oil? Hows engine oil pressure?

Compression tests are eazy enuff to do. Ford specs: 90 psi dry. Do a dry (5 puffs min) and ritter down. Then add about 1 spoon of oil innna sparkie hole and compression tester again. (5 puffs min) and ritter down. If'n compression increases at least 20 psi wet, then worn rings and time to seriously think about a rebuild job..... ....sorry, Dell

You should check compression. Hopefully you can use the screw-in type tester between the tank and head. If not, you may have to remove the hood.

Ford specs are 90 psi minimum.
