I've tried to find "altenator bracket" in the archives, but no luck. Perhaps I'm not wording it right. I have popped my third altenator yesterday mowing in my woods. Am going to buy a store-bought one now. The one a had was great for about a year. Also, on my 2N, one of the lift arms is missing the rotater ball. A New Holland dealer said to buy a new end and have it welded on. Anybody do this? Would it be better to buy a new lift arm? Thanks in advance. Rob

I would be wary about welding on a ball end from the store. Cast iron is hard to weld unless you really know what you're doing. Also, check eBay, as I see lift arms (that attach to the cross shaft) come up for sale all the time, and you'd still have an original arm that would match, if that matters to you. Then again, your arm is broken anyway, so welding on it wont put you in any worse shape.

If you need more info, check the archives again, but use the spelling "alternator". GL.

Sounds like a fairly common problem.

Your axle is rotating up and hitting it.. You can shim the axle pivot area on each side to limit top to bottom axle movement.. and also go to a shorter belt / different bracket.

Also.. try an alternator repair shop.. you might luck up and get a new or used housing if the innards are ok on the alternator.. cheaper than a rebuilt one.

Good luck

Is your alternator riding on your steering arm or radius arm? If so try a shorter belt to keep it up off the arms more.

Just a thought

Yeah you can buy the lift arm end with the ball for less then $20 at a farm/ranch store. Cut the old one off and weld the new one on.
What do you mean "popped" your alternator? Broke it off? Bracket not holding? Whaaaat?

Sorry I wasn't very clear on the subject. The ear broke on the altenator. The alt is still good, but I can't mount it. I have another one, but would like to get a better design before I waste another. Any suggestions? Any would be greatly appreciated. As I would climb a hill the would raise a hit the alt and that would break it. Thanks again, Rob

I would go down to the local generator shop. I was in my local shop last week. They convert these N's all the time. They did one just the week before. Those guys most likely are familiar with the situation and I would expect them to have a few different and adjustable brackets on the shelf including some 'universal' brackets. The kits they use come with an order form for brackets depending on the N model year.
If they don't have it locally then work from this link.
