I've got an 8n and a John Deere finish mower, it doesnt seem to work well, it doesnt cut like a mower. It cuts more like a bush hog, it mashes the grass down and leaves a lot of uncut grass. Everything is hooked up right, the blades are sharp, etc. I think the 8n may go too fas, even in first, to do a good job? Any advice out there?

One other thing you should check is the belt tension. On my finish mower if the belt is not tight enough the blades just bog down and won't turn (mow). Just a thought. .

Bob, I have a Woods that I use behind my 2N. I use 2nd gear with the throttle about 3/4 + open and it cuts perfect. If my property were flat I might even be able to mow in 3rd.

I have to think that the issue is with the mower, not the tractor. Follow the others advice and double check the rotation of the blades and make sure that the mower is set up properly (front slightly lower than the rear).

One other problem that no one has mentioned. Do not let the grass grow too tall. The 8N is too fast and lacks enough power to cut the tall stuff. Your combination just wont hack grass that is very thick, tough and over 8-9" tall. I have Argentine Bahia that grows thick and almost fast enough to see it when summer rains hit. Very tough too, must cut it every 5 days in mid season. If too tall, like a foot I cut 1/2 a swath with the 6' KK finish mower and that takes all the power the N can muster sharp blades and all!

Sounds like all of your blades might not be tight.

Take your impact wrench and really tighten those things down just to make sure.

I've had the same problems as you and in my case tightening the nuts was all it took!

I mow with a finish mower in third gear and it comes out like a golf course. I'd look at the mower and direction of rotation and then re-check the blades. Something isn't right with the setup. It should cut clean and neat even in 3rd gear. I think the other gentlemen that suggested that the blades may be on backwards or something funny are on the right track.
Good Luck, Lee

Had a riding mower that did the same thing a while back. The guy who sharpened the blades for me put them back on upside down.

You've heard of dumb questions, well I'm going to give a dumb suggestion; are the blades on correctly? Sometimes when replacing blades it's easy to put them on backwards (don"t ask) so that the backside is trying to do the cutting. I...uh, the guy that did this really felt stupid when he realized what was wrong.

Just a thought,

John A

Do you have a Sherman tranny? Try a different range in the Sherman. I can turn my pto at like twice the 540 rpm, man does that bush hog howl! Sounds like a turboprop taking off. Is the mower turning in the correct direction? Figure out which direction the blades must turn and make sure they do.

The combination you describe works well for me. The problem you describe could be the result of running too many PTO rpm. If you blades are reasonably sharp--razor sharp isn't required- try gearing up and throttling back--i.e. run it around half throttle in second gear. Also helps a lot to have the front of the mower set lower than the rear so the blades only cut once.

Your mileage may vary
