Rear Tire WRESTLEMANIA!

I am expecting my two new tucker tieres for the rear of my 8n. I had the "Tire doctor" down the road break the bolts loose on the center disk of the right tire for me. The left tire is a different story. My puny little 250 ft/lbs impact wrench won't budge em'!! I even soaked them in liquid wrench for several days, torched them, etc. etc. I don't want to load this tire up just to take it back down the road to get this guy to use his insanely sized impact wrench just for that (he told me it was rated at 1000 ft/lbs) I read in the I&T fo-4 that the rear tires were adjustable, in that you are supposed to be able flip the centers around to make the track wider/narrower and such. I just don't see how that's possible! At any rate, I got the other center out, painted it, and got some new bolts. It looks pretty good. Anyone got any tips on breaking these suckers loose, 'cause my next step is to bring out the dremel and cut the blasted things off! Thanks in advance for all your help!!

Rob

I went through the same thing approx. a year ago. Finally loaded the whole thing up and went to the local tire shop. Their impact would not budge so he brought out a large 4-way which I assume was for large truck wheels and he managed to twist them off. Note he was a very large fellow. Replaced with carriage bolts (I know..I shoulda used the right ones)

I tried all the tricks on mine and wasn't successful, so I took the wheels/centers to a tire shop with an impact wrench powerful enough to twist those hardened bolts off.

I repaired the rims successfully but the tires didn't survive. So...TuckerTire's deal was so good that my 9N has been wearing the Tucker set for 2 weeks now. I'll get used to looking at the replacement rims, but I'll save the originals.

I know how you feel. Just two days ago my 1/2" drive socket with a five foot cheater bar merely spun the carriage bolts loose on the outer side. Don't do this or you will not be able to use the stock carriage bolts again! The Dremel tool with reinforced fiberglas cut-off discs barely made a dent in the three nuts. Home Depot to the rescue!!! The have a 4 inch Ryobi right angle grinder on sale for $25.00! All you need in addition to this is a 4" metal cut off disc to go with it. I was through these three bolt/nuts inside of five minutes. wc

I used a 3/4" drive Breaker bar with a 4' peiece of 2" pipe. Oh ya and my foot. Worked better then impact. Oh yeah and like the other guys said buy a couple cans of PB Blaster.

Just like the other guys say.. big cheater pipe for leverage.. lots of soaking in pb blaster, and alternating heating / cooling.. but don't overdo it on the heat... try applying the pb on the cooling cycle.

good luck,.. with the cheater bar.. either the bolt will come loose.. or the head 'll come off ( or the socket / drive will shear! )

Rob,

I`ve yet to find a wheel I could`nt get off the center with a 1/2" breaker bar w/cheater. A breaker bar will usually do the trick when an air impact won`t.

Rob....I used a 1/2 Drive with a 2 Ft cheater bar welded on....Ya might wanna hit 'em w/ some PB Blaster or something before...BTW..That extra 2 feet makes it a WHOLE lot easier...
