Finally got my brand new tires put on and I filled her up with gas, hitched up the brush hog and went to work on my field. A few minutes into the first round I noticed something dripping on my boot. It was GAS!!! I shut her down immeidatly and noticed the whole tank was drenched. Just as I was inspecting the whole mess I noticed a few drops hitting the manifold. I didn't know I could run so fast! Luckily the thing didn't catch fire at all. I suppose the good Lord was smiling on me today. I am immagining that I have a leaky tank. Is it common for a 50+ year old tank to rust on the top? (I thought that was wierd) I can't see any hole, so I am assuming that it is on the top. Is it OK to patch a tank? If so, what can I use? OR..am I better off to replace it? How much do tanks usually run? Here's the kicker of it all: After I got her back up to the garage and put her away (disgusted) I noticed that I had put that brand new tire on backwards! What a day. And tomorrow it is supposed to rain. I ain't complaining about the rain, I just wish it would quit long enough for me to get something done.

Had the same thing happen. My problem was I had group of contractor workers on the property and one of them stole the gas cap. The advice given was right. The seal on the gas cap or you could have overfilled the tank and the vent leaked. Rusting is common and there is a kit from "JC Whitney" and others to reline your tank, for small leaks, which works well and lasts many years, my brother-in-law did it 20 years ago and it is still good, but you must use a vented cap after as it will render your vent useless.

Rob,

Severasl years ago I bought an 8N with a sherman in it - main reason for buying it. I used it a fair amount before I parked it and pulled the hood to see why I could not fill the tank over the 5 gallon mark without it leaking. YEP!! Rust holes in the top. It turns out that the top is NOT smooth, rather it has four depressions in the top (probably for strength) that are semicircular and about a half an inch deep, one inch wide and about 8 inches long. Condensation will set in these depressions and .... RUST!!!! Mine had a hole half the size of a dime in one spot and half that in another. I haven't tried to repair it - yet! It has been out something like two years and setting in the sun - just inside of a pole barn so it does not get wet but the summer sun can get to it and "bake" it out. Maybe some day I'll work on it - when my "to do" list is a little smaller. :-)

Reagrds,
Larry

Two of those depressions might be for clearance for the battery door hinges.

N - joy.

I had a leak in my tank on my Jubilee. It was a Bracket under the tank. I took it to a Radator shop and he welded it. I have no problems now.

Like the other guys said check the vents first.

If it was a hot day and you really filled it, the gas could have expanded faster than the engine could burn it and maybe it blew it out the vent hole. Gotta be careful about overfilling gas tanks on hot days. It's especially important on vehicles with plastic fuel tanks (like motorhomes). I've heard of them rupturing from the pressure.

You know, your gas tank might be fine, I would sooner think the seal one your gas cap went bad. Check it out. You might find it be a simple fix.

I bought a gas tank last year from Davis Tractor in Alabama. Your computer search engine should find it. I think I paid about 150 dollars plus shipping. They were very quick about the order made on-line. I think the tank is about 167 dollars plus shipping now. The tank filler opening was slightly to the right side but had no effect for my application but my original tank had the opening in the center. Mine was a continuous rust clogging the on off supply knob. Glad your OK.
