Seems this N was out in the weather for the last 2yrs but spent decades being ignored in the shed. The big tool box bolted to the top of the dozer blade had a Ford screwdriver, open end wrench, and pliers. There are other tools that I don't think are Ford, they may be Everett. This tractor has the loop ammeter, grease gun holder, toolbox and other stuff I haven't gotten around to figuring out yet, all original. 10x28 rear tires are worn but not surface checked. Nothing is damaged by rust, just surface.
Down side: Grill, rear fenders, rocker, and pto shaft long gone. Most of that stuff was removed to mount the trencher near as I can tell. Trencher is long gone. Couple of dents in the hood. Only one light and one running board.
I’ll do ok because I paid less then $600, including hauling.
Now I want to take it easy getting it running. Trying to make sure I clean and lube stuff before running. I guess the proof meter cable comes out of the housing for lube, don't want that to break. The wiring harness is shot and she needs at least one plug wire. I’ll squirt some oil in the spark plug holes before I turn her over some. I don’t want anything to tear up because it’s dry.
Anyone think of anything else I should fiddle with before I start her up?

The post from Lee reminded me about fuel systems problems, and I only got as far as the carb in my earlier post. Plan on the gas tank being rusty & full of water. Clean out the bowl as well. You can wait to reline the gas tank, but for a quick clean job, carb cleaner and some BB's, ball bearings etc, shake it up real good, and pour everything out, let it dry and refill w/ clean gas will get you going....but watch the bowl, because you will not really get the tank "clean" w/ this method.

The gas tank is pristine. Never been water in there. I'll ckeck the screens. No, this is a machine in seemingly excellent mechanical shape, except they pulled with the Everett one time too many. The proof meter has 2100 hrs. I think that's good, dunno never looked at them before. There's no water or sludge in the hydraulics either. The crankcase is 1 qt low but has clean oil. See that glass oil bottle on the blade? When was the last time you saw one of those? 1963? It was in the tool box and it still had some oil in it.

That's great! I've got one of those oil bottles somewhere, and the carrying rack as well. Sounds like you have a solid N to work on!

It looks like the clutch may be adjusted all the way out is the only thing that shows wear so far. Guy might have been riding that clutch with the trencher on there, dunno. Do you ride the clutch on a dozer? That and the right rear hub is dirty. The sun came out, I'll go fiddle with it for awhile.

Sounds to me like you're on the right track. You didn't mention it but I expect that you'll put fresh oil in the engine before you try to start it. Might be smart to fill the oil filter cannister with oil too. Little less dry time that way maybe. I'd drain the old gas and replace it with some fresh gas. Probably be smart to replace the tranny, hydraulic and differential oil soon. 5 gallons of 90 wt mineral oil or MC134D for $20-$25. I'd run it a bit and take care of any new seals needed at the same time. I expect that you'll check the points or replace them since they've been sitting so long and are probably corroded. The rest of the tune up stuff can wait but that's the main things I'd consider initially anyway. Others may have some good suggestions that I haven't thought of.
Good Luck, Lee

I've never had an N in that condition, but have worked on a few A model Fords in worse shape. Sounds to me that you're on target. Does the engine turn at all? If so, just a bit of oil in the cylinders (with a full crankcase, of course) would be in order. If the engine doesn't turn, we always filled the cylinders up with kerosene and let it sit & soak a few days. We also always rebuilt the carb, and replaced points/plugs. Yes, the proof meter cable does come out of the housing and could use a good lube job. Also, take out the thermostat, stick the garden hose in the radiator, and flush it out. Get a can of electric motor cleaner and spray out the starter & generator. If it has been sitting a long while, look it over real well for critter nests! Keep us posted on your progress!
