I was bushhogging the field this past weekend. I was in some particularly tall and thick grass, and had been running the hog almost all day, when I came into this tall and thick stuff. After about five minutes the radiator started steaming so I lifted up the hog, and disengadged the pto and let it idle for a minute. Then I figured I'd better give the ol' gal (and myself)a break so I started to head back to the house when she sputtered and died. I gave her about 30 minutes to cool off, and she started right up, with no problems since. So here's my question: Obviously I overheated the engine, but that had all the symptoms of a vapor lock. I thought these ol' gals were designed not to vapor lock. What caused it to stall out? The radiator was clear and completly full, so it wasn't debris in the fins. Any insight is appreciated! Thanks in advance----Rob

Hello Rob:

Unleaded gas "boils" at a lover temp than leaded gas (lower vapor pressure).

Engine heat rising, while idling, may have caused the fuel in the line to vaporize and cause the stall. then when it cooled down, you have liquid fuel flow.

I have had to put a deflector on my N so that doesn't happen when I brush hog in August. At times I can hear the gas rumbeling in the tank when I shut down after a long run. I allow plenty of time for fumes to disipate before I re-start. A volcano N is not my idea of a fun date!

Be SAFE & Keep on N'n,

Charles

Rob-

Updraft carbs like the Ns don't vapor lock. Your coil gotta little too hot. OR your gas tank isn't venting properly because it got a little dirt/vegetation in the vent while you were out hoggin' and the negative pressure in your tank was able to equalize while you shut down.

Somethin's amiss with your cooling system. Even if the radiator's full (BTW, "full" means water ONLY up to cover the fins, NOT all the way up) the N's cooling system depends on good water circulation - that's water pump, t-stat, and crud in the radiator. If any of these is not functioning correctly, you will overheat an otherwise VERY difficult-to-overheat engine.

As a general rule, change oil on ANY engine which has overheated even briefly as your oil can "cook" and lose its lubricating quality.

I also had these problems this week too. A few years ago I had the radiator repaired which resulted in reduced capacity. Two years ago I put a new waterpump on and I think this aggravated the problem, too. This only showed up when the grass was really thick on uphill slopes. With the unusually wet season this year, it is tough going quite a bit and I was getting steaming quite often. While mowing with one side in a ditch I picked up a miss that eventually shut me down. I let it set for a while and it takes off again, but this reocurred three times before the rain set in again and I gave it up while it was running to get to the barn. I just got a new radiator to install and drained the carb with the hopes that any dirt would come out the bottom plug. Are these two unrelated problems and will this course of action most likely resolve my trouble? Thanks, BOB
