I had some time to kill the other day, so I stopped at the local tractor dealer. I'd never been there before. They had a bunch of Branson tractors (I think that was the name). Anyway, they had a backhoe on a palate that looked like it went on a 3point hitch. I asked the guy and he said yes, that it was a 3pt hitch attachment, but it wouldn't work on my 8n. He couldn't give me a good answer as to why. So, what's the deal? why won't it work on my 8n?

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I love my 8n, but these tractors had lots of cool bells and whistles (like live pto and hydraulics, power steering, variable speed PTO, 4WD....and a 15,000 dollar price tag)

Hey Rob, here is a backhoe I built from cad plans, it weighs in at about 500lbs and doesn't seem to be to big of a strain on the 2N. I added a pto pump, 11 gpm as the original pump is about 2.8 gpm and that is on a good day. Hope this helps. Buckeye.

Now that is a nice sized one for the tractor! You did a nice looking job on it too. Mark H.

I've posted this before, but for new readers, my neighbor has an N sitting in his field with a backhoe on it. Per him, it cracked both axel trumpets, which he welded. He built some kind of 6"x6" channel frame under the N (9N?) to support the backhoe and relieve the stress on the tractor.

Here is a Backhoe made for the 8N Tractor. The hydraulics are run off the PTO. It is a very heavy add/on for the 8N Tractor and can damage it if you do not keep up with all the parts that will get loose useing it. Things like wheel studs get rounded out, the ears can get broke on the rear end supporting it. The axles get torked around and the trumpits get loose and the bearing on the rear take a beating too. The front end will last a long time since it will be real light after you put this baby on the back. This one came off a 1951 8N tractor. mark H.

Here is the Hydraco Hydraulic Pump that is bolted to the PTO output to run the Hydraulics for the Backhoe. It slips right over the PTO Shaft and bolts onto where the chain mounts were. Mark H.

There are 3pt backhoes that use the pto to drive a hydrulic pump to power the backhoe. I haven't seen a new one in a while. Check out WWW.cadplans.com. They have plans so you can make your own. Its not that hard if you have a welder. There is a link in there web site were you can buy the metal cut and ready to weld, or a whole kit that has the pump and hoses and everything else you need.

Hydraulics. Those backhoes have rams and your 8N doesn't provide for remote hydraulics. Besides the belly pump doesn't move very much fluid so even if you tapped it somehow it wouldn't provide the flow tools like a backhoe want and need. The pressure is fairly low also.
