I know this is O.T. but I need advise, and I know one of you wise folks can help me. I have a 1976 Dodge d-100 pick up truck that I use around the farm for all sorts of "dirty work". Last week I noticed the gas tank was leaking, so I pulled the tank and noticed that it was plastic!! I never heard of such a thing, but anyway..I couldn't find a replacement tank, so I tried to patch it. Every hole I patched seemed to sprout 3 new holes, so I am thinking that the tank is just plain shot. So today I got more intense on my search for a new tank and everywhere I called told me the same thing: there is no one out there that makes aftermarket tanks for this old beast. Now the wife is telling me that under no circumstances is she gonna let me go down the road in a vehicle with a leaking gas tank. So my options are now even more limited. I can try to get one made, or get rid of a truck that I love almost as much as my 8N...almost, but not quite. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or has anyone ever had a tank made at a welding shop? And how much would that cost (ballpark figure) Any help you could give me would be appreciated!

Rob, Yesterday a friend of mine just asked if I knew of any D-100's around. He's looking for a winter project, and this may be it. If you don't want to mess with it, or just want to keep the wife happy, e-mail me. Thanks, and good luck.

The jury is still out on the old truck. If I can find a sutiable replacement farm truck I will happily unload it. My philosophy is; for the price of a new "beater" pick-up, I could replace the engine and tranny in mine, and have it in tip top shape.....but thats me. We'll see what happens. Thanks for all the help on my VERY O.T. question!-----Rob

I agree with what Ken C said in that they made that same basic truck for many years and you should be able to find a newer salvage truck with a good tank at a reasonable price. Unless, however, they have a high failure rate and they are all snapped up quickly. I have ran into that in the past where a part has a high failure rate and as soon as they hit the salvage yard the part is gone. Realize too that these were not the sellers that the GM and Fords were of the era and probably less common. Also you might do some checking and see if any other Dodge product such as the vans used the same tank. This would widen your search some.

Buy yourself some fuel tank liner, "Red Kote" is the brand I last used on my 2N. Its a thick, goopy liquid that will coat the tank when it cures, it may take two applications, I think I paid about $11.00 for a can of it. The radiator shop wanted $100 to boil out the tank and line it.

Had a friend who put an "L" shaped gas tank in the bed of his truck. You know, the kind that goes under a toolbox. He then tapped into the drain with a fuel line and effectively had a 150 gallon fuel tank. He also could pump out of it for his tractor. The only problem was that he didn't have a gauge and ran out of gas one night in the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma.

FWIW

Rob,
You might try checking with a couple of Dodge specific boards such as The Power Wagon Board or The Sweptline Board. There should be lots of tank options, especially if the truck is an old farm truck. Just find a tank that will fit the space and strap it in.

Replacing the wife could be more dangerouss than a leaky gas tank :)

Dodge used basically the same frame for the trucks from 1972 until 1995 - I'd think that you could find a more recent used tank that would fit under there just fine.

Take the tank to a radiatoer repair shop that can coat the inside with a plastic liner. They do that here for motorcycle gas tanks.

Why limit yourself to a Dodge tank?
Surely you can figure out a way to buckle any old metal tank under there in a safe area.
WOuldn't take me long with some strapping :-)
