Sidemount 1950 8N
I just recently had my tractor tuned up which included a carb overhaul, points, condenser, cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Then I had the genny overhauled, replaced the voltage regulator, and rewired the whole thing.
I still have to pull the choke out to get her to start, even when she is warm. I have not replaced the coil. Could this be the culprit of the hard starts? Or os this typical behavior of the TSX-33, and I am just being a worry wart?
Thanks for your input!---Rob

P.S. The sun finally came out long enough for me to get about 3 hours of bush hoggin' time in today. I love my Tractor!

Yes, it is standard operating procedure to choke your carb every start. Fuel/air mixture is heavier than surrounding air so when you shutter off the fuel/air in the manifold will descend back into the carb after awhile because these are UPdraft carbs.

In automobiles, the fuel/air descends into the MANIFOLD (DOWNdraft carb)so choke isn't necessary after it's warm.

Dontcha touch that carb!

Yeah well that doesn't 'splain why some N's start without choke.
You emphasize don't "touch that carb." What's up with that? I think it was bj was freaking out over the thought of adjusting a carb. I fiddle with them all the time. If I don't like how the new adjustment is I just put it back the way it was. 1/8 turn at a time is like no big deal. In fact, I can always start over with DellWa's no brainer or do it like the book says. Either way it gets tweaked.
You have a bad experience adjusting a carb or what? You need to tell me so I can avoid that same experience.
I didn't cut that tree but I did catch some nice fish.

Some Ns will start without choke especially if:

1) Converted to 12v which spins the engine faster therefore creating more suction (Bournouli principle or however his name was spelled)

2) Fuel mixture richer so more condensed gas is sitting in the cylinder in the first place.

In reading your first post, it seems you are agreeing that it is NORMAL to choke at first start AND sometimes even which engine is warm. Ford specs also confirm this is normal. Don't know why you're so upset.

IMHO, bg is a very knowledgeable and helpful member of the Board. He's not known to "freak out" over anything.

The MS carb is a very simple, reliable device. Properly built/rebuilt and adjusted it should not need repeated "tweaking."

As for my N's carb and other carbs I've worked on ('61 VW, '63 Valiant,'69 Custom 500, '72 Corolla, '86 Corolla, '86 F-150, '80 Chev p/u, '71 T-37, '67 Lemans, '65 Tempest, '73 VW van, '73 Maverick, '74 Maverick, '80 Mustang, '01 Mercury Outboard, '? Wisconsin, ad infinitem).

Yeah, I've had good and bad experiences. One thing I learned is once you get it in specs LEAVE it alone.

Thanks to my father who was a Master Sergeant Master Mechanic and Machinist in the Stretegic Air Command, Kelly AFB, and the CC Army Depot, I learned a lot... like not screwing around with carbs unnecessrily.

I'm glad you caught fish.

I fiddle with em till I get em like I want them. I had three of them on my '56 chevy, that was fun.
I fiddled with the N until I noticed it didn't need choke in warm weather and left it there. I guess that's better then spec. Like I told wasshisname, no big deal.
And I'm not upset...sheesh. Chill out. You don't like a discussion? Just say so. Never mind. I got your message.

The operator's manual gives starting instructions that includes pulling choke and immediately letting it go. So that is called for and normal.
My 2N starts without choke in this warm weather and when the engine is warm, mostly. If it doesn't I hit the choke and it does. Either way is ok with me.
A fellah was by here the other day says his two N's start without choke in this weather. He's the type that fiddles with his N's. It's probably getting the carb set up just so-so because my engine has sub-spec compression and burns oil. Points and ignition doesn't seem to be a big deal so long as it's close enough. I set up the carb like the book says. Don't worry about it but you shouldn't have to keep choke to run.
Guess it's worth some bragging rights but not much more.
