Broken ring?

This 2N smoked and the compression on #2 was below spec and 17% lower then the others. The cylinder missed. The plug would show up with the gap closed with carbon fouling. Piston to sleave clearence was way beyond spec. The walls of the cylinders were stained like feeler gauges are stained after you clean some rust off them.
Replaced the valves in #2 and lapped the seats. They were in terrible condition with the exhaust valve a lot of hours from the last time it seated. Compression came up nicely but the engine still smokes. The spark plug doesn't foul at all any more but the cylinder still misses. I'm surprised how clean that plug is, I mean it looks just fine.
To me it seems that the kicker is that I get dense puffs of light colored smoke at irregular intervals. I get a big puff followed immediately with a smaller puff and then no puff for a bit. I'm not sure a big puff is always followed by a smaller puff but it's all dense, light colored smoke. Looking back down the lane on a still day you can see the blue haze, it's embarrassing.
So what's up with this? This morning I'm wondering if a busted ring would create the irregular puffs of dense smoke. I don't know. Somebody knows, what's up with this?

I have never had an engine develop an intermittent problem like you describe. I would bet that the rings are simply bad as you suggest and you are seeing an accumulation of oil burning off. It stands to reason that it would seem to fluctuate as the engine runs and the cylinders run through the firing order. Closest I can remember was a friend of mine who had an old Pontiac that had a bad cylinder. Had to clean the plug in that cylinder once a week or she would foul so bad it would drop off to 7cyl. We were young and stupid and we didn't know about higher heat ranges. Too arrogant to ask our fathers too.

I think you have yourself close to convinced it may be time for a rebuild. Since you did the valve, you have the savvy to know what is going on. The fact that you find the blue haze embarrasing suggests that you want it right. Get a manual, a heavy jack, and a parts catalog. Air compressor and an impact wrench are essential (experience).

Good Luck
