I noticed that 2N will start in gear and no clutch. Was thinking the starter button button down there by the shifter base was mechanically interlocked to prevent that. Haven't looked yet.
What am I going to find? Shouldn't that fail in the interlocked mode?

Rob,10 to 1 your interlock has broken where the hole is . this is where starter button passes tru. abuse on starter button it cracks it(not lining up shifter and forcing it) this is not a easy job to replace : top cover of trans and steering housing and such has to be removed and one more thing that interlock it holds your gears from sliding

So the interlock needs to be in there but it may be broken. Or the bottom of the button is broken so it isn't long enough to reach.
Well if it's a big deal to replace/repair the interlock it will stay near or at the bottom of my list of things to do.
Looks like the button comes out easy, hope that is the problem.

I just checked and the lockout works ok if the shifter is in 2nd or R and doesn't work if in 1st or 3rd. What's up with that?

Worn hole or bent rod on the bottom of the starter button? There is no end to the interesting things that we N owners find in our tractors that have been bent, bruised, broken, or butchered. Eventually, you just have to step back, shake your head and grin at "how in the world was this thing even RUNNING?"

Good luck

Jeb

Boy that's true enough about the condition and the 'work' a lot of guys put into a tractor.
I'll pull that button one day and see what I've got.
Right now I'm splitting my 8N to remove the Everett tranny. Watch out ebay here I come!

Yes, the starter button in front of the gear shifter has a safety interlock. Basically, there's a sloted half-sphere thingy in the transmission that only allows the button to be pushed in when the lever is in neutral. I'm going to try to post a pic of if it but i'm unsure of my picture posting abilities. Tyler Neff has it on his site.

Of course, if someone bypassed the starter button, then the neutral lock out has also been bypassed. If You have to press the button in front of the gear shifter to crank the tractor, then you should have a safety lock out.

My 2N still uses the button in front of the shifter but it still starts in gear. Either the interlock can wear out or the one in my N has been removed. One more thing to fix when I get to it. ;^)

Well that's what I'm saying, I have to press that button down there but it can be in gear and if it is and the clutch is out then the dang thang starts moving!
From the exploded view it looks like maybe someone could have removed the interlock, 9N7229B. Find out when I get in there I guess.
Fair warning to 9N/2N operators, test it for yourself because it might not be working.
I think the interlock can be removed from the 8N also.
