I have a whites finish mower (5 ft) that I use with my 8N. The drive shaft is very short, and is seldom aligned, by that I mean that the pto and the mower are always at an angle to one another. Will this wear out the u-joints on the mower faster? It is only when I use this mower that the tractor starts to overheat. I can run the bush-hog all day long in the tallest of grass with no problems. Any ideas how I can get it to stay aligned? and is this misaligned pto shaft situation what is causing the tractor to overheat? Thanks in advance for any help!!---Rob

Ron I would recommend stabalizer bars. putting an angle on the pto puts a strain on the gear box. This in turn makes the tractor work harder (? overheating) and also the mower works harder.) Also that mower will turn by hand when not attatched to the Pto

Rob, I'm not familiar with that particular type of mower, but I don't think the misalignment would cause any significant pull on the engine or cause any additional wear on the u-joints. The shaft is usually misaligned vertically during use any way. How much out of alignment are we speaking of? If its as much as 45 degrees or greater, then that may be the problem.

Sounds like there may be a problem with the pulleys, gear box or belt(s). Try disconnecting the pto and turning it by hand. I would think it would turn some, if not disconnect the belt(s) and try again. If it still won't turn, try turning the blades themselves (with pto disconnected of course). Listen for any rubbing or binding sounds as that is a sign of metal-to metal-contact and needs to be eliminated.

Let us know what you find out...John A

Thanks John!

Good call on checking to see if everything is moving freely. The angle is pretty severe, but not 45 degrees. I don not have stabilizer bars on the mower, because the attachment points down by the axles are too short to get them on. I am gonna fix that tomorrow. I am also gonna take the cover off to see if everything is turning properly, and not binding. Thanks for the tip!---Rob
