It almost seemed to easy to be true. Changed the 8N-638 hydraulic pressure relief valve ($6.75 used from Wengers) along with $60 (5 gal) in 134 Hyd Oil and voila - a lift that stays up with 275 lbs on it overnight and doesn't knock anymore. I wish I had a better (read cheaper) place to get the '134' but I can't complain; it could've been over $300 to recondition the lift arm and pump assemblies. My thanks to everyone who keeps answering the same questions every week to the benefit of N'ers everywhere.

As usual I have to end the post with a question. The used pressure relief valve I put in my '52 8N looked dramatically different than the one that came out of it, which is the one pictured in the MPC/FO-4. The head is hex shaped with a flush fitting slotted screw in the end of it. The unit was slightly longer and the oil passage holes in different places. Was this off of a 1953+ tractor? Thanks Again, wc

If you gat a Walmart Super Center - $23.88 for oil
Sam's Club - $18. How hard is it to change the valve on a 49 - I've been told by several that it may be the reason my lift arms won't work.

Page 15 of the Master Parts Catalog shows the same set-up for 1948-1952 although the 8N638 press. relief/control valve normally is not associated with the lift arms not raising at all. For that I'd look to the hyd. piston, etc.

Yikes .. 60 bucks for the oil...

Don't you have a napa / car quest / farm supply store near you? Most of their universal transdraulic oils meet the 134d specs... I paid about 25 bucks for a 5 gallon pail at TSC a couple months ago..

Glad to hear it is working good.
