I was mowing the grass today when the belt on the finish mower started smoking. I pulled the belt cover off and found one of the tensioner springs was busted. By the way, this is a "Whites" brand finish mower. I was considering replacing both springs with a homemade belt tensioner that is basically like an alternator belt adjuster in that it is really just a bolt that pulls the pulley holding the belt tight. Does that make sense? If not, let me know and I'll explain further.
My dilema is, I am wondering why they didn't do this to begin with? Would replacing the springs with a bolt to pull the pulley tight cause problems? The springs are the only thing that hold tension on the belt, and even with both springs in tact, the belt would slip occasionally. Needless to say, the belt is shot, and I need a new one, but I haven't been able to find one on the net anywhere, or anything on Whites brand finish mowers. Nor have I been able to find any thing in the archives on Whites brand finish mowers. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it! Thanks for taking the time to give any advise, no matter how off the wall it might be!-----Rob

The spring acts as a self-adjusting tensioner. Your bolt scheme will require periodic manual adjustment as the belt wears/stretches. If the belt was slipping/smoking and the spring is busted sounds like you might have other problems. I'd think both the belt and the spring (common coil type with hook?) should be available many places.

HTH,

Dan

You should be able to take the old belt to a NAPA or any good parts store and have them match it up for you.
