How are belts measured?

I broke a belt on my mower last week. I can't find a part number and I am having to go by size. The belt is 1/2 inch by 130 inches long...Give or take a few fractions of an inch. All the belt advertisers I have found online are advertising belts in the 40-80 inch range, but nowhere close to 130 inches. My question is: are belts measured by the radius of the belt, and therefore I should be looking for a 65 inch belt? Thanks for your help!-----ROb

the way i have always measured belts was to use an old belt that we had that was cut. i think it came off some kinda mower and was real long, so my dad cut it so you could take and wind it around whatever pulleys the belt had to go over, and then mark it with a peice of chalk, take it off and lay it straight and measure it with a tape measure, worked great, we use it al the time when replacing a belt on something that we dont have the old belt for, or on something new that we built, used to use it all the time back when i was always makin go carts and stuff

I've done the same with rope as well. Yours is a nicer more accurate idea though.

Hey, what you need to do is get a white paint pen, and wark off inches on that old belt... then it would be an even easier job of measuring.

Yeah, do the white marks, and then every foot, mark the foot, so you don't have to count all the inch markers.. etc.

Visiting from the Ferguson forum again ... came across this a while back, and it works for any 2 pulley belt drive - but not serpentine or 3 pulley drives, OK?

Belt lengths for V-belt (two pulley) drives can be calculated using the following formula - which avoids having to cut anything . . .

[Sum of pulley ODs x 1.57] + [2 x median distance between centres of pullies]

Then add 0.5 inch to that value to allow for the belt pitch.

The median distance between the belt pullies is measured with the adjustable pulley at its mid-point of adjustment.

Rob,

Go to one of your local auto parts stores. That's where I've always bought belts for my mowers. The outside circumference is how they're measured, along with the width. If you're not sure of the width, take the belt in with you.

Good luck!

Ron

The last time I bought a belt at napa, was when i changed an alternator on a yanmar tractor i had.. had a different pulley and longer mount.. so the oem jap belts wouldn't fit. Napa had me adjust in the belt tensioner, and take a 1" wide tape, and run around the pulley setups just like the belt would.. to measure the circumference. And then order that size belt. They could order belts in centimeter increments...

130 inches.. what you got with a 10+' belt.. a cub with a belly mower? Come to think of it, at TSC, I've seen some long v'belts bundled up for the finish mowers.. don't know that their 10' long though...

I just called my local carquest store, and while they said they don't stock a 1/2 by 130 belt, they can order them and have them next day... so you should be good to go. I also asked about how to measure them.. and they said the end to end was the correct measurement ( as in, cut, then measure end to end )... so you got it right 1/2 by 130..

Am interested to hear what you are running.

Wow! thanks for making the call, soundguy!!! I am working on a Whites Finish mower. It is, I have found, difficult to find parts for it, so I am having to measure the blades, and belt that I broke and cross reference them with other brands I find online. Time consuming, and tedious, but it sure is a good mower, and saves me a heck of a lot of time!!!!! Thanks again for the help!---Rob

No problem. Our local napa and auto parts stores stock not only automotive but lots of ag and big truck parts for all the local contractors. I figured I would call and check availability... it was a nice suprise when they said they could get it.

I'm used to having old junk..er equipment laying around trying to find retrofit parts that fit.

You would be surprised though.. I bet you DO find mower blades that are close that fit. Might even find one that is close that a machinist could adjust for you.. like drill the arbor out/weld in a reducing bushing, etc..

You are right about how you measured your belt. I think they are measured on the inside, might make a little bit of difference but not much. Someone should have a belt in that length. You might have some trouble finding it in an auto parts store unless they also supply stuff for ag equipment.
