What John and SouNdguy says, cept they didn't tell you how to put the hydraulics in position control. The little leaver under the seat on the right side next to the hydraulic control leaver should be in the vertical position. Horizontal position is draft control and is used mainly for below-ground implements.

I do not own a Ford 600 either so another WAG.
A mower should be used in position control mode. If you have to use chains to hold it off ground you have a problem with your lift; or you are using float mode. Put in position mode and set mower at desired height. Hyd should hold it there. If not chains is a cheap way to work it till you can repair hyd problem.
FLOAT mode is used when you want the implement to follow the ground and not the height of the tractor. Such as draging a box or blade scraper. If you use position mode with a box every time the tire hits a hill it will raise box off the ground. O.K. if you go slow and have the nack of a operator to make minuet changes to keep the ground level. But 99% of us do not so we use float mode and let weight of box FLOAT across top of ground shearing off high spots.

I don't own a ford 600.. so this is a WAG.. but you should have position control on a 600.. Sounds like you are having a problem keeping you lift where you want it? If so, check to see if you are in draft mode.. ( if the 600 has draft/position control selector like our N's do ). Draft mode will make your lift 'hunt'.. or 'float'..
