i'm considering welding up a 3ph boom pole for my '49 8n. not much in archives. seen ones using top link, and some connect direct. what length do you think an 8n could handle? 6-7'? is a hand winch a good idea, or just use an end hook, etc. am thinking of box channel (2" x 3") with a top strap. open to all comers here!

IF YOU BUILD YOUR BOOM POLE JUST DONT DO IT LIKE THE PLANS THAT WERE SENT IN YOUR FOLLOWUP. I HAD ONE LIKE THAT, AND WAS NOT HAPPY WITH IT AT ALL. I THOUGT MY HYDRALICS WERE WEAK BECAUSE I COULDNT PICK UP HARDLY ANYTHING. THEN I USED A REAL ONE AND COULDNT BELIEVE IT, THE TRACTOR PICKED UP ANYTHING I COULD HOOK TO IT,EVEN PULLED FRONTEND OFF GROUND ONCE ( NO FUN ). ITS ALL IN THE DESIGHN, BUILD IT AS CLOSE TO A MANUFACTURED ONE AS YOU CAN.

JUST A LITTLE ADVICE. THERE ARE THINGS YOU BUY AND THINGS YOU MAKE. A BOOM POLE IS ONE OF THESE THINGS YOU BUY. THEY ARE MADE THE WAY THEY ARE FOR A REASON, DONT MAKE IT CORRECTLY AND YOU WONT GET IT TO PICK UP A DECENT SIZE TRUCK TIRE,IVE BEEN THERE. DONT GET GOOD PENETRATION ON WELD JOINTS IT CAN BREAK UNDER LOAD AND HURT SOMEONE. NOW WHAT MAKES MORE SENSE, 60 BUCKS BRING IT HOME USE IT FOR YEARS OR BE FRUGAL SPEND 1/4 AMOUNT FOR A HEADACHE THAT ISNT RIGHT? NO OFFENCE JUST MY TWO CENTS WORTH.

no offense taken pete, thanks for the input. nearest tractor store anything is about 1 1/2 hrs drive, and from what it sounds probably wouldn't buy new "cheap" one. local fellow has 2 for sale - $160 and $175. i am too frugal for something i think i can build better. question is to build one to use a top link, or one that omits the top link per bar-n drawing.

drawback on building/using top link style is that (anti)sway bars would be needed to stabilize side to side, but with it, boom height could be adjusted by adjusting top link. could maybe design in adjustability on the other style by changing the connection point where the triangle coming up from the lift arms attaches to the boom.

pete did ya ever look at the welds on most of the cheap boom poles? talk about not enough penetration, im sure most folks could do better with a buzzbox in there garage at home. the cheap boom poles are a light duty unit, i plan to build one someday but i can assure you it will be alot stronger than the ones they sell for 60 to 80 bucks. and believe me i would trust my own welds alot more than i would trust a weld made by a chinaman

I made one too. Mine is just 2" black pipe welded to a drawbar. I have some stiffiners and hooks. Very similar to the plans Bar-n show. It probably cost me $20.00 for the pipe and I had the drawbar laying around. I use it all the time. I put a trailer ball in the drawbar also and tow my trailer and load it. My insperation came from picture of one built and installed on Nadine an N. I don't remeber the guys name though. I could email you drawings if you like.

Tim-

Do you know you can buy one that fits perfectly fo about $80? Doesn't have a winch, but you can add a simple hook or block and tackle to one...

What evil steve says.

Heck if you want 'ok' duty.. TSC sells some in the 49-69 range. I got one, and have used it to pick up my dearborn 10-1 s bottom plow, and my 6x8 heavy pasture drag.... that heavy drah on the end of that pole is enough to make the front end just a tad lite.. looks like a 2.5" tube or something. just has 2 eye loop ends on it.. one at the ens, and one at the mid point where the stiffeners are. Certainly all my N can handle, that boom will handle.

It might be a bit lite for the NAA and the NH 1920 would make a pretzel out of it.. but for the 8n it is fine..

I've got one of those cheap ones,I got 15 plus years ago with my 8N,it's a little bent, but gosh,it's been abused,I've had the front of my N 5 feet off the ground pullin stuff with it(not safe practice,I know),I've had the front wheels off the ground with my IH424 using it too, can't beat'em for the money.. handy as a pocket on a shirt
