What is the deal with the toggle switch that controls the headlights? I can't seem to find one that will last very long. I bought a heavy duty switch this last time (9 bucks)and it broke the record at almost a month before it went kabloowie. What gives? What am I doing wrong? Any thoughts on this one will be appreciated!!

Get a heavy duty switch.....35A or more.

Or..... .run a relay, so that all the switch sees is the current to pick up the relay. I did this on my 9N, I run 150W KC Daylighters for headlights and worklights..... great for blowing snow at night! 'Course a 135A alternator helps too..... .*grin*

I had one of those push pull switches for the headlights and work light, it quit working after a year or two of use, I purchased an on off ( right to left) toggle switch at autozone its worked ok for several years now, everything is hooked up direct with no fuses. Still 6 volts .

I don't know the nitty gritty on electrical stuff (ohm's law, etc). When I put lights on my 850, I went to AutoZone and bought a $3.00 generic two position pull-type headlight switch. It screwed into the switch hole on the side of my dash just fine (N-switch location may be different). The switch has a built in fuse holder and 5 terminal lugs. On lug is for the hot wire. Two of the lugs get power in both switch positions (full out and halfway out). One of the lugs gets power only at the half position and the other lug gets power only at the full out position.

I wired my headlights to the lugs that get power in both positions. I wired my work light to the lug that gets power only in the full out position and I wired the taillight to the lug that gets power only in the half out position. When I pull the switch knob all the way out I get headlights and work light. If I push it back in half way I get headlights and taillight. The switch lasted 3 years then developed an annoying internal short. So I replaced with another $3.00 generic pull-type headlight switch. $3 for 3 years is better than $9 for a month!

I here ya.. I lost a switch on my 8n a while back.. and now have lost 2 switches on my NAA.. one is not its fault.. cow rubed her horns up and down the dash and physically broke one.. the other just died electrically... go figure.. and was a nice sealed marine switch.. not a cheapy..

Rob,
What you need is a much hefttier switch. Lets assume you have 2 bulbs on at the same time. Also I will assume( since I don't know what you are using) that they are rated at (say) 75 Watts each. For the two you get 150 Watts of power. Ohms law says that the total amperes drawn is the wattage(150) divided by the voltage (6) which eauals 150/6= 15 amperes. For this case your switch has to be rated above 15 amperes in order not to burn out the contacts. Use this same formula for whatever the power (wattage) is for the bulbs you are using. By the way where have you been buying your switch from? You may have to look at some industrial catalogs like 'GRAINGER' or McMaster for a hefty switch. I Hope this helps.

150/6=26 Amps

Jim,
I don't know if and when math rules have changed, but, 150 divided by 6 has always been 25!!! Try a calculator I think its correct.

If you don't have a fuse in the light circuit you might should install one. It may be that you have an intermittant short circuit and it is ruining the switch.????? ??
