I made the switch to turf tires and boy was it expensive. $1,350.00 including new 11x28 rims, 2 new multi-rib tires up front, Titan Turf-Trac R-3's in back; all with tubes. Now I did get turn- key service at my place and had the calcium chloride removed from the old bar treads, but still... My dad only paid $800 for the tractor in 1952.

First thing I did was rent a Woods core aerator and turf renovator for the yard. The tractor left no marks, for once. In reading the archives, lots of folks made mention of improper toe-in causing the front tires to slice the turf when turning. Turns out the toe-in (1 1/4" negative) was hurting the situation so I adjusted it to be neutral. Now for the finish mower.

'528N(MD): I did exactly the same thing two years ago with my '51 8N! I could not be more pleased. No, they are not cheap, but if you use your tractor mostly for mowing, that's the way to go! They also look pretty good! I hope you are as happy as I am!

Like you I am very pleased with the results. Of course I read every archived post about turf tires, rims, calcium chloride and chains I could find first. I was astounded at the traction these things have w/o the extra weight of the calc chloride. It went up the steepest part of my hilly property with wet grass and yesterday I pulled my neighbor's skid loader out of the mud! The other thing I did was to ditch the hi-rib fronts for Harvest King 6 ply multi-rib 6.00 x 16 tires and to re-adjust the toe-in to stop the turf slicing. Again, it was because of this forum that I was able to find out that turf tires R-3's with chains get better traction than chains with bar ags.

I have near perfect 12.4 x 28 turf tires on perfect rims and wheels that I will trade for 12.4 x 28 ag. tires on wheels. Any takers? Let me know.

Hi Michael,

I would be interested if you happened to be in my part of the country. I'm in central New York. Let me know.
