I have read throught the archieves on the proper readings about the ammeter for a 1941 9N, but still don't have my answer. My 9N puts out 10 amps on the ammeter with high RPMs, when I lower the RPMs it drops to between 0-4. Question is "I am I going to burn my battery out with this setting or do I need to adjust the generator"

appreciete all the help
this is a great board

What kind of service does the tractor get? If you start it and run it for an hour or two every time you start it then ten amps may be too much. On the other hand if it only runs for occasionally and for short periods you might need that much to keep the battery up between uses. If you aren't adding water to the battery frequently it may not be broke.

Your mileage may vary

Rob..... .....the 9N's 1-terminal 3rd brush 11 amp 6 volt generator is NOT a sophisticatedly regulated device. The general rule is adjust the 3rd brush for about 3 amps showing on your ammeter when operating. There will be a very noticeable difference in ammeter charge depending on engine rpm's or if'n you have headlights on/off. 10 amps is ok for a short time (15 mins) to recharge the starting drain. Too many amps and you will boil the water out, warp the plates and short them out and need a new battery. I think 10 amps charge is a little too much and would adjust the 3rd brush for 3-5 amps. Its hard to get more accurate..... ...Dell

Rob, there is a small flat-head screw on the back end with notations for + and -. Turn the screw to - to reduce the charge rate.
