I hate Snakes! I am sure there are some who will disagre with killing Copperheads and Water Moccasins, but I think they are the most vile creatures on earth, or at least my property. Anyway, I was thinking of getting a single shot 12 gage to keep on the 8n for just such occasions when I see them down by the creek or pond while I am bushhogging. Do any of you have any ideas how I could mount a shotgun on my tractor, safely? Not like a gun turret or anything, just something to hold it in place until needed. Bear in mind that I don't want to spend a fortune on the shotgun. Maybe like a 80-100 dollar wal mart shotgun. Do any of you carry "snake repellant" on your tractors? And if so, how do you do it? Thanks for any imput!
---Rob

I have the same problem with snakes, all 3 posionous kinds. With all the cows and horses around what I do is chase them on my 8N and pin them down with a front wheel and then get off and chop them up with a machete.

I may stand corrected. Truth be told, I don't really know that much about Snakes. At a young age I was told about water moccasins, copperheads, and Rattle snakes, the latter being the easiest to identify. Copperheads are pretty easy to identify too ( I think) but the other snakes I am seeing around my pond and creek are different and I assumed them to be Mocassins. I tried to look them up and found this snake to be the closest representation. Check the URL:

Mom and Dad always gave me one piece of good advise about identifying snakes "if it bites you and you get sick, or die, you won't care what kind of snake it was, so steer clear of them and be aware of them." Good advise, I thought.

6 shot colt, single action (load five and hammer resting on empty cylinder, bird shot, cross draw holster to keep it out of the way with a leather "wang" loop over the hammer to keep it in the holster. Only carry about 6 extra cartridges. Not fighting off bad guys just snakes and ground hogs. Hardly know its there.

Rob, I don't know where you are in VA, but my bet is, like Dallas sez, you aren't seeing water moccasins. They are in the Dismal Swamp (Suffolk, Cheasapeake) and I understand one was once found as far west as Hopewell, but that's it. Now, copperheads are another story. Like Dell and others said, get a pistol (I've got a 1907 Army long barrel Colt .38) and use rat shot. As to the tree-huggers..... claim self defense!

Back in '56 when I first went to college, the college also had a gunsmithing school. There was this one gunney that every saturday would go rattlesnake hunting for the skins. He tanned and sold 'em for cowboy hatbands, big buckle tooled leather belt inserts, custom made western saddle cantle wraps. I thought he was "crazy" but he claimed he made money at it.

Weapon of choice: school made 12" long barrelled 45 cal "Buntline Special" double action pistol using #9 birdshot custom loads. Caution: sawed-off shotguns are illegal. I'm a believer in shotguns for close-up defense, getts ridd of buck-fever problems..... ....Dell

I carry a double barrel derringer chambered in .410 in my pocket.
First barrel is 00 buck shot. Second barrel is #6 shot. Find it effective
for a wide range of varmints, snakes included. New England Arms
makes em if interested. Rgds, AB

12a is a little overkill.. 20g or a 410.. you couldprobiblt make one out of wood and mount it to side shhetmetel or put a sidearm mounted on your fender

Ha Rob, I have no problem with killing cottonmouths, copperheads, rattlers, or any other poisonous snake. However, unless you live in the southeastern corner of the state, there aren't any water moccasins in Va. They are by far the most misidenified snake in the country. They are a native of the southern coastal plain and simply can't servive the cold of even N.Ga. muchless Va. I've heard stories all my life about people killing "cottonmouths" as their called here in N. Ga. But the state dept. of natural resources has never documented a single case of a water moccasin being found north of the pedmount. My point is, make sure your killin the bad ones, and not the good one.

PS. I think a sidearm would be a better way to go to kill snakes off a tractor.

Amen! I can't get folks around here (N. Ga.) to believe that. "Oh yes, it was a Cottonmouth Moccasin!".....
Probably a king snake of some sort, which will keep the really poisonus snakes away => Rattlers and Copperheads..... Those are what we have. I'm told we have Coral snakes, but never seen one.

No one believes me either, people have heard these tales there whole lives and refuse to believe there not true. Like the coachwhip snake beating a man to death. I've never seen a coral snake here either, but they are know to exist. You're right about the king snake, they are known to eat poisonous snakes.

I grew up in Tennessee, and it was illegal to kill ANY snake, poisonous or not. Check your local laws before you get into trouble.

Here in New York,
A person may not transport or possess a shotgun or rifle in or on a motor vehicle unless the firearm is unloaded in both chamber and magazine.
Unless

I would bet that this only applies to vehicles operated on a public road. It certainly does not apply to vehicles operated on ones own property. Otherwise, by the same reasoning you could not possess a concealed weapon on your own property either.

As to the initial question, tractor is scary enough without adding guns to the equation, but if'n I were to mount one, (since a cheep shotgun was weapon of choice) I'd try to mount it on the fender somewhere maybe utilizing the rear light bracket, straight down so it's protected and not pointing at me when working behind or in front on the machine. I'd also put some serious kind of rubber jaw clamp or scabbard so it can't fall out!

Well, I don't know what kind of nonsense they pull there, but here's the law in Iowa:

724.4 Carrying weapons.
1. Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person who goes armed with a dangerous weapon concealed on or about the person, or who, within the limits of any city, goes armed with a pistol or revolver, or any loaded firearm of any kind, whether concealed or not, or who knowingly carries or transports in a vehicle a pistol or revolver, commits an aggravated misdemeanor.

(section on edged weapons deleted here)

4. Subsections 1 through 3 do not apply to any of the following: a. A person who goes armed with a dangerous weapon in the person's own dwelling or place of business, or on land owned or possessed by the person.

(following irrelevant sections for law enforcement persons deleted here)

So, provision is made for being on your own property with a lawful weapon of any kind in a vehicle.

The Colt Walker was made for the Texas Rangers. They were carried across the saddle in a double brace (holster). They were a bit heavy to be carrying on your hip, so they were carried near the saddle horn. These were black powder "muzzle loaders". A fella could load then with a bullet or shot for the occasion at the time. Now, you might look at a way to carry a .410 Snake Charmer or two across the dash above the steering wheel like our fore runners...

On a related note... From the Wisconsin DNR site:

"A landowner, family member or employee of the landowner may use a firearm or bow to shoot deer from a farm tractor or implement of husbandry, such as a combine or hay wagon, ONLY on the landowner’s property and ONLY in the DEZ. Farm trucks and ATVs may qualify as a farming implement if they are used ONLY for agricultural operations.

I strongly recommend that anyone who can legally possess a firearm on a tractor or farm implement keep the weapon unloaded while the machinery is moving and not load or fire it until the vehicle has come to a complete stop.... "

My 651 (dads tractor) has had a holder, for 22 rifle for groundhogs, since the tractor was new. It had a "U" shaped holder on the right of the dash and a pipe aprox. 12" long hanging from the headlight bolt, this pipe had the last 3" filled with lead, a safety feature. The end of the barrel only goes in the pipe 6", leaving 3" in case of misfire. The old single shot still rides there on occasion. I am NOT responsible for any accidents from this setup. BURT.
