I have an extra starter, but no drive. Today I bought a new drive with the number 502 on it . I think it is an Ace 502. It is the clutch style. Will I need to do any griding or just put it on. Before he gave it to me someone sput it OUT. Will I need to get it back down? My old 1947 starter still works good, but does occasionally spin out. I hope I will not have to drill another hold in the shaft. I have been reading in the Archives for 2 hours and have read many posts about starter problems. Yesterday I put on my new Zane Thang and it works like Zane said it would.

I always take the drive apart to get it back down. However, if you haven't taken them apart before, you might not want to try it. A lot of the new style drives requires another hole to be drilled 1/2" in on the shaft.

Barry..... ....the improved "clutch" starter drive is "pinned" in the original bendix drive mount hole. I think you'll like the way it doesn't dis-engage on an "engine-koff" like the worn OEM bendix drive does ..... ...Dell

oh... I forgot. The starter man tried to "disengage" the starter drive by pressing it up against a wire wheel on a bench grinder. The drive really has to spin rather fast to disengage. His wire wheel was quite worn and as a result could not spin the drive fast enough but I didn't have any problem putting it in anyway. When the engine starts the increased rpm's is what slams the drive into the disengaged position when installed.

I forgot to add that I don't have a new pin to install it unless I borrow one from my old starter. Could I cut off a bolt the right size and use it or is that pin of a hard material? .

Do yourself a favor and buy a new roll pin of the correct size. I would hate to think of what might happen if that pin comes out and your starter drive goes flopping around in your tranny. Also I just went threw four trips to the starter rebuild shop because the starter man put on the incorrect starter drive. Make sure you get a "small barrel" clutch drive. I wish I had the part number for you. HTH
