While I was cranking my 9N I suddenly heard a lot of noise down by the starter that sounded like metal being chewed-up. When the noise stopped the starter would still spin but it wouldn't turn the engine over. I pulled the starter. Page 56 in the F-04 manual appears to show a gear on the left side of item 16 in figure F081, which is the starter drive pinion. Looking at my starter, it doesn't appear that this gear is on my starter shaft? Is that what got chewed-up? If that is the case, do I have to split the tractor to get the damaged gear out? Can I leave the gear in there and not split the tractor? Can I just replace the gear or do I have to replace the entire starter? I am not a mechanic and splitting the tractor seems like quite a chore. Any advice that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Bob...This sounds like DeJa Vu! I bought a 12V conversion & New 12V starter from YT, the first starter after about three engine turns the main bendix spring broke, they sent me another I installed it, It worked for a few days then like you I heard a loud clank, & nothing!Upon removing the starter, I found the gear on the starter shaft had shattered, leaving only about a third of on the shaft. This time I took it to a local repair shop, seems it had a bent shaft, they replaced the armature & used the gear from the first starter. So now I have a $250.00 starter! I would have it checked before you put it back in. On mine theres no way of telling if the shaft was bent to start with, or it bent when it jammed.Good luck, Dale

Bob..... ....did you know that Ford actually designed broken bendix drive storage space in your tranny housing? Well if'n they didn't, sure alotta bendix drive gears being smuggled around in tranny housings. (grin)

Recommend you get the new and improved "clutch" style starter drive.

Bottom line, donnna worry 'bout itt..... ..Dell

Just replace the starter bendix. I have found pieces of starter bendix in the tranny housing before and I know of an 8N running today with the pieces of the starter bendix laying in there somewhere. If you had any starter problems before this now would be a good time to have the brushes and bushings checked. You may want to look at the flywheel gear teeth while the starter is out. There is a new type starter drive gear available and it is said that some of the new drive gears require modification of the starter shaft. I just use the original type bendix.

THe small gear probably got chewed up and is in small pieces in the bottom where it can do no harm. I would not split the tractor. You might stick a magnet in there and see if you can pick up the little parts, but i do not think it necessary. You do not have to replace the entire starter, just the starter drive that rides on the starter shaft. I replaced my starter drive last wkend in about an hour total. New starter drives are available and I would not put in a used one.
