I read the message below and am going to try some of those fixes, but here is my situation.

Tractor: 1939 9N, with new electrical system minus coil. New gas tank.

Problem: Runs good for 30-40 minutes and then starts to sputter, backfire and then eventually quits. Takes 5 minutes to get it started again and then it runs good for a few minutes but then starts to sputter/backfire and then quit...etc etc etc

What I have done: Checked the gas going into Carb, good flow. Took the plug out of Carb, no gas, took air flow tube off carb and gas started to flow again. Reassembled everything, same problem as before. A small about of dirt in the fuel from the plug....One last thing, when I rebuilt this tractor this fall, I installed and in line filter between the bowl and the Carb which runs over the top of the engine, down to the carb. Not sure if this could be effecting the situation.

This happen about every other time I use the tractor. Last time was the worse. thanks for any advise

I had a very similar problem with my 8n. I put in a new gas tank, fuel line, filter and manifold. And it still had this problem. Would start up and run but the fuel would stop going to the carb and kill the tractor. (you can check this by installing a see-through filter just before the inlet on the carb. when your tractor starts to die, check the filter to see if it is starving the carb.)
I never did fugure what was causing the problem, may be a stuck something. Anyway, I put a zenith carb on last fall, and ever since It runs like a champ. The problem has never come back, and this tractor runs as good as new.

Rob,

Since you are leaning toward the coil as the problem, Make SURE that you tinker with the spring and tab contacts on the bottom of the new coil, slightly extending the spring and bending the tab downward A LITTLE to make sure you have contact with their respective terminals in the distributor. Otherwise, you could still be chasing spooks.

Ron, who's been there, done that.

Dell and the others have given you the most likely causes. One other way outside possibility comes to mind... plugged vent hole in the gas tank.. as you use gas it pulls a vacume unil fuel will no longer feed. You may notice choke helps this as you are getting a bit more vacume on the fuel line... cacking the gas cap imediatly aleviates it.

Probably not your problem.. but an easy no cost test while you are also trying the other methods.

I have a 9N did the same thing, but took 1/2 hour to restart, replaced coil problem went away. another thing to check if that does not help is the check your valves, usually if the coil breaks down, will not start until it cools off, usually longer than 5 minutes. just my .02 worth

Rob, yes indeed the inline filter could be a problem. If the filter is installed so that the gas doesn't run through it and keep the filter full of gas, you could have air in it to the point that when the gas flows out, it fills with air and stops your tractor. How do I know this. My latest 9N that found my camp last summer has the inline plastic see through filter on the left side when sitting in the seat and facing the front of the tractor and is horizontal. I had to bend the gas line so that it stays at least 3/4 full with gas over the outlet. This will be revised next summer. Good Luck. Ron

Rob..... ...this is classic BAD COIL problem.

Your 4th inline gasoline filter is NOTCHUR PROBLEM.

Unfortunately, the squarecan frontmount ignition coil is NOT ROBUST as we'd lik'em to be..... ..Dell

thanks Dell,

I figured the coil was the problem after reading your advise in a previous message. I have heard that my Grandfather had the same problem with this tractor 30 years ago and he always tinkered with the carb to try and solve it, I bet if he was still around he would be glad to finally know what the problem was. thanks again for all the great knowledge you put out on this website.

Rob..... ...one of the founding members of the N-Board used to claim 80% of all N-Carb problems were solved in the ignition system. Problem with N-Carbs is they's gotts them handy-dandy adjustment screws right outthere in public for all to twiddle with..... ....Dell
