My dad bought the 2-N in 1953 ( I was 3) Ever since I can remember the hydraulic leaks down. Used to be 10-15 min. with a heavy load. Last fall I put in Tractor Supply trans-hydraulic fluid ( the thin stuff) now goes down in 3-4 min with a load. What do you think the chances are that my cylinder would be good enough to take the naa piston? Also I have dad's old engine HONE, to hone out cyclinders. It has a coarse stone and a Fine stone. Could I use his old hone to clean it up. Till I put in the thin oil it wasn't much different now that it was back in the 60's. I just bought a Zane Thang about 2 months ago and it works great. My pump does knock some with a heavy load, but it stays right there.

I overhauled my 54 NAA hydraulics last summer. It would only stay up for about 15 minutes. When I pulled out the cylinder, the O-ring was about 1/16" with no backer washer. I was amazed that it stayed at all. After I replaced everything it is now good for a couple of days. I run the Ford 134 fluid.

Make sure that you get the O-ring and washer in the correct sequence and replace the cam follower pin also.

Good luck!

Hi B. Jones. I took the 9N top off last summer, cleaned it out, honed the cylinder, put in new rings & gaskets and I believe it's as good as new. Stays up for a long time. Cost 6 bucks. Good luck. Ron

Lots of people hone the cylinders and install the naa oring/leather/synthetic washer piston. As long as you smooth any sharp ridges that might cut the oring.. you are probably good to go. The oring and backup washer will be much more forgiving on a slightly worn cylinder wall than the metal piston rings.

If your not looking to tear it down... why not put in the heavier oil? TSC also sells the oem style ford 90wt mineral oil for a couple bucks more per pail than the transdraulic oil. The thicker oil will probably help your 'hang-time'. It does/did on my 8n's lift which drops slowly when the clutch is depressed.

As the old saying goes..... no guts, no glory. You will have to pull the top cover & piston anyway. Look it over; if it is not to bad, then hone it out & replace the piston w/ the NAA. If the cylinder needs to be replaced, the cost is about $119.
