My old 2-n also has a knock when I have a heavy load on it. I think I'm going to order the NAA piston with the 0-ring. Am I correct that would help quite a bit as I have the thin oil in the hydraulic? How does the oil get from the pump to the top cover? Is there a line? When I take off my top cover to put in this piston, what will I have to reseal? Gasket, O-ring? I have a book, but the picture does not show it very well. I know I need to order the piston, o-ring and a top gasket set. Do I need anything more? This site has been very helpful on such matters. Till this past fall, I always kept heavy oil in it, but in cold weather the hydraulic was soooo slow until it warmed up. Again thanks guys.

A new relief valve (on an 8N) solved my knocking problem when lifting heavy loads. That is all I did.

As others have said, replacement of the o-ring and piston will only help leak down. Most people claim bragging rights if no leak down for more than 20 minutes. In order to alleviate the knock you must replace the cam blocks in the pump. If you remove the lift cover or the pump, you must install new gaskets there. Those gaskets between those parts and the rear end housing are the only thing that holds in the pressure that the pump puts out (kinda like the head gasket and engine pressure).

Unless the knock is unusually bad, with "hobby use", the pump will PROBABLY go for years with no problems.

Of course, that is not to say a complete pump overhaul would not be a good idea, if you have the time and resources to do it right away.

The oil gets to the top cover by means of a steel line that rises vertically from the pump mounting face to the top face of the rear casting, where the top cover mounts. It is sealed at top and bottom only by the pump gasket, anf the top cover gasket.

I think you have half way answered your own questions.

First.. a piston itself won't do much for the knock. Thats in the pump.. it is showing its wear. With the thinner oil.. the ware is more apparent, and audible. If you have fast leakdown, the piston, and a new or cleaned relief valve are probably a good idea. If no leakdown.. and just a knock.. well most of us have a bit of a knock on heavy load...

There is a standpipe for the oil to go up.. And yes.. I would use new gaskets.. etc.
