I am gonna get a load of gravel for the driveway. I have a 700 foot gravel driveway that is turning into a mud driveway. The local quarry won't spread it, they only deliver and dump. So I figured I'd spread it down the driveway with the 8N and the back snow blade. Any suggestions as to how I should go about it? Part of the reason I need more gravel is because I messed it up pushing the snow. Thanks!---Rob

Rob,

I used to live in North Garden (south of Charlottesville on 29). The folks at the quarry in Red Hill would deliver and spread gravel on my driveway from the back of the truck using chains. They just will not push it around afterward. This gets the gravel about in the right place. About every 3rd time I would get a neighbor to clean up afterward with his tractor.

One delivery I got to see the truck do a wheelie! The wet load of crusher run shifted suddenly while he was going up hill. Scared the **** out of the driver.

Good Luck,

Cliff (VA)

Rob,

I agree with the rest of the post, talk to the driver and have them spread it. I just had some gravel delivered on my 500 ft lane. He spread most of it, but couldn't spread it all. I used the sputterin 9N to level it off the best I could using a box blade, then I latched a railroad tie onto the tractor and it leveled it out real nice. Good luck

I had the local gravel company send out 20 tons and when the truck got here, He said do you want it in a pile or should I spread it? He set the chains on the tail gate and lifted the bed and headed for the house. When he got to the house he turned around and made two or three short runs and did the hold parking spot. I would have hated to do the hole thing with my Jubilee.. I have bladed it several time since. I could use another load pretty soon.

Have a Great Day

Sounds to me like you need a new gravel company, I have used several companys and have never heard of one that wont spread it, unless its frozen.

Well since I retired from dump truck driveing I know that the driver can and should spread the gravel. I've spread 100s of loads of gravel, sand, and dirt its no big deal. Unless the drive way is on a slant then ya he can't do it that way. The reason I said he should is because you are paying for a service so you should be able to have it done your way

I have more than a driveway. It's more like an 1/4 mile lane. The folks that I buy my gravel from is fantasic. ( IMI in central Indiana ) I have to purchase about 40 tons a year. 20 ton about twice a year. They set their tailgate chains at what I want and there she goes. Everything is great. When I want a pile in front of the shop or barn.... it's just where I want it soes I can spread it with the 'N'.

ron, i found the 3ph scoop vaulable in the initial distribution of gravel, as you can deliver the amounts you want to the area you want, then a drag with the back of the scoop does a fair job of leveling. a few passes with the back of the scraper blade then adds the final touch. good luck.

I have a 300 foot driveway that I have kept maintained with gravel for over 28 years. I use a local sand and gravel company and their driver can adjust the spread gate on the back of the dump body and spread a fine layer of gravel as he drives up the driveway while raising the dump.

I agree with Polish Mike, they can spread it for you if they have a decent dump truck and an experienced driver.

Steve (OR) is also correct about using the back side of the blade for the final smoothing.

I could have paved my driveway with concrete for all the money I have spent for gravel over the years, but then I wouldn’t have had all the fun of using the 8N and scrape blade.

Like the others said... I'll bet that a cold drink, or money for a cold drink and bag of chips will get the driver to pull ahead while dumping. This makes a shallow long mound, rather than 1 6' tall pile of gravel.

Using a box or rear blade, you could either back in, lif the blade and take a bit out, and pull to spread it.. or if the pile is low enough... drive in and drag, or push out to spread. Should be easy wnough to make an entrance to the pile if it is dropped shallow by the driver.

Good luck

I agree with Mike. I hired a guy to haul some gravel for fill under my garage floor and he was dumping it in a pile, and I had to spread using my back blade as he had his bobcat at the site we were getting gravel from. It is quite a task to spread from a pile. It can be done, but it is a lot of work. As Mike said talk to the driver when the load shows up and I would bet he would at least spread it some for you which would make the job a lot easier even if it is merely in smaller piles along the length of your drive. Even better if he has the spreader chains on the tailgate a good driver can spread it to where you will have to do very little leveling.

You say that the quarry won't spread it, but I'll bet a dollar that a few bucks to the driver that delivers it will get him to drop spread the load, leaving you with a whole lot less gravel pushing to do. Try asking him when he shows up...

For the final pass use the back side of your blade. It won't dig in like the front, and will smooth things out alot easier

Like the others have said what is between you and the driver is just that. Its probably a blanket policy due to tree damage and power line liability. At my old house I needed two loads, the first one he tailgate spread but I had a power line so he had to dump the second. I did spread it with the back blade but backing up a 4' pile of gravel is not something you want to do.
