I was finally able to do some work on the old 9N yesterday and low and behold the problem is solved. Just a little background, Since Nov of 03, I had changed all the electrical parts on the tractor, the intake manifold, the carburator, new fuel filters, new coil, and tried numerous suggestions from this board and still the old tractor would run fine for a while then start to sputter and backfire something terrible and then run fine again. (Even blew out my muffler). Despite what Dell and others said, I always believed it was in my fuel, so I check, recheck and recheck the adjustments on the carb, bought a new carb, changed the filters, adjusted the float, but still the sputterin problem continued. I checked the valves and compression too, and all checked out. Since I just replace the rotor button, distributor cap, points, condensor and resistor in Dec, I didn't think they could have been the problem, but in fact that was the culprit the whole time. Not sure which one it was because I replaced them all yesterday and she started right up and ran for three hours with not one sputter or backfire. I am a happy camper. Thanks to all of you for your great advise and suggestions. Maybe someday when I get a little my N time under my belt, I will be able to provide input this board instead of just receiving its output.

Excellent! Thanks for letting us know. I don't want to say I told you so, but I'd bet in the years of internal combustion engines there has been more unnecesary carb rebuilds, replacements, etc, for no other reason than sparkies. I for one fell into that trap a few times, but learned. I try and share my experiences, so others don't follow my path.

If you think about it, as long as you have a good filter system, and you good fuel can get to a carb (the filter isn't plugged), it's probably unlikely that all of the something a jet is gonna wear out. Now it is true, you can have the float stick, or in my recent case, the spring on the choke flap broke, but really, that would be rare. But points, condensor or coil just "going bad" are a reality, and I will always assume sparkies first.

I'm glad everything is back to normal. I love when my 2N hits a load, and the governer kicks her in.

Take Care
Steve

Congratulations !! Glad you finally found the culprit. Sometimes these weird problems can be a real challenge. I've been through a number of those aggravating deals where the symtoms don't match what the problem actually is. Later, Lee

Rob..... ...thanks for followup. Us board guessers can only offer solutions based upon the presented problem as described. I know you were gittin' pretty frustrated. Sometimes we don't gitter right, but we do have a pretty good success ratio. Its a great feelin' when ya solves yer problem, ain't it? Thanks for the follow-up..... ...Dell

I'm going to take a shot at this as it is real strange that the engine would run fine, miss for a short period and then run great...mechanism....mechanism.....mechanism.

Can't see a mechanism to cause the problem anywhere but in the condenser. Everything else would (I think) go bad and stay bad so the engine would never recover. But the condenser is made of metallized paper(plastic). If it shorts between the (it's internal)plates.....shorts out your points...maybe not completely but enough to rob some spark...the short will get hot and burn open (inside the condenser)...these caps are designed this way to do just that if they get an overload...They use them a lot to filter power lines as they clear themselves if they fault and not bring down the line.

The butler..... er ah condenser did it.

Rob, I bet it sure feels good to have it running smooth again. Congratulations. Remember what you and all of us have learned, when you think it is a gas problem, most of the time it is electrical. I put in a new points & condenser in one of my generator power plants at camp and after a while it started hunting all over the place. Replace the condenser and that was it. The supplier said he had a received a whole shipment of bad ones, all foreign made, believe India. Again good luck. Ron
