I took off the top cover yesterday and looked at my lift cylinder. I already bought tne O-ring piston and a new cover gasket. I was going to hone the cylinder but found out that my hone will not work on any cylinder under 3 inches. There are lots of scratches some maybe .005-.010 in. deep. I know I am guessing they might not be that deep. I spent 90 min. last night going through the archives about what to do. Should I have someone hone it or should I buy a new Cylinder? I want it to last a long time and I have a brush hog that is pretty heavy. ( They all are on a 2-N). Barrett Jones

I rented a hone from the local rental place, it did a good job of taking out deep scratches that i thought were beyond repair, only cost a few bucks, New NAA piston and O ring works great . ( the old chrome rings had scratched the he// out of the old walls ) .

B. Jones,
I've repaired two lift cylinders that had scratches in them that were deeper than what you claim to have, using JB Weld in the scratches then honing real good. Just make sure the cylinder is REALLY CLEAN before you put on the JB Weld. Then do as Dell said and get yourself the right size hone. Takes some time to do it, but you will have good results.

Berry..... ....gitta smaller hone, they do come in different size ranges. Probably sumptin like a lawnmower engine size. Brake cylinder hones are usually too small. The improved NAA "O-ring" piston is fairly forgiving of imperfections but whynot try to make it as good as you can. Don't hone "dry", use kerosene or diesel as cutting fluid..... ..Dell

B. Jones, Just went through the same thing a week ago. Have your old cylinder honed out. The new O-ring & backup washer are quite forgiving to scratches. Mine works like a champ. HTH Jim

I think I would take the cylinder and the piston to a machine shop & see what they say about honing it out, and get a quote. Or, you might consider a new hone; seems to me that a brake cylinder hone should work.

One word of wisdom--if you buy a new one, it will probably be a Chinese one. I bought one, can't remember where from, but when I put in my 9N the cover would not go on. I had to grind down the front of the cylinder a tad to clear the opening. If you can't get it to fit, check the new cylinder against the old before you put it in.

FWIW,

JU
