I broke the shear pin on my pittsburg 240 brush hog today. Fortunatly, it broke, and not the hog. I felt my stomach bottom out when I heard the thunk and noticed the shaft was turning, but no the blades.

What kind of pin/bolt do you fellas recommend I replace it with?

Thanks!! ----- Rob

DON'T USE GRADE 8---TOO STRONG AND DEFEATES PURPOSE OF THE SHEAR PIN ---I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE --I GRABBED WRONG ONE ONCE AND CAUSED ME TO BUY A NEW GEAR BOX ON MY MOWER---YOU LEARN BY YOUR MISTAKES---USE GRADE 2 ONLY

Thanks Dell! Bolt grades and their respective strengths are a mystery to me. If the bolt I buy just happens to be smaller than the hole diameter, will that cause it to shear faster (without as much abuse)? Or will it just cause a mangled mess?--Thanks again---Rob

the lenght and width of the bolt is not what does the job, if the bolt is to small a diameter it will fail quicker from the slop in the implement, get the same size bolt that broke,, so it fits snug in the yoke, and put a nut on it, most people use a grade 2 which is a soft metal, grade 5 is stronger, and grade 8 has lots of strength so it will not break, what you are looking for is something to "shear" when it hits an obstacle. if you are not sure of grade ask the person for help, grade 8 is sometimes blue, but will have I think 5 slant marks on them, grade 5 will have 3 slants and 2 will have none as far as I remenber,,I have a 6foot hog I run behind my tn55 and grade 2 just snap as soon as I hit a ant hill, I have to use a 5, but I wouldnt go any stronger than that,, starrt with 2 buy a few 5's,, they all use the same nuts, hope this helps some,
