I just came across this ad on e-bay for electronic ignition for the 8N, and it sparked a question. Have any of you ever used electric ignition, and what do you think of them versus breaker points? I am a VW bug fanatic from way back, and I had a buddy that swore by these kits. He said that he would be scared to drive outta his garage for fear of the points slipping, or wearing out and leaving him stranded. I have never had much trouble outta breaker points. What do you guys think?---Rob

I've had electronic ignition from Gennesse for five years now on my 52 8n and swear by it. It is so easy to install it's scary and you never worry about it being out of sorts like points. She cranks first time every time. It will not, however, be an excuse for badly worn rings or bearings. If you need an overhaul, make electroni igniton a part of it. The module goes into the distributor in place of the points so no one knows its not original. Don't know the life of the bugger but so far its great. I'm putting it now on an 801 powermaster I'm finishing and have put it on two other 8n's I sold. No, I don't have stock in Pertronix but wish I did. It does not work for front mount distributors but for all side mounts through 1964, it works fabulously as George W. says. Good N-ing.

I have it! One of the best things I've ever done to this tractor! Starts first crank, runs better than ever! Highly recommended!

I don't have much trouble with points. I use points till they are wore out and that can take 20-30 years. I do after installing and gaping wash the contact surfaces with lacquer thinner. If I have a condenser that does not transfer metal from one point surface to the other I keep that condenser.
The car I take on long trips I do replace the points once a year for peace of mind. However if you need more spark due to high compression, high RPM etc. go for the electronic.

I have a buddy who put an electronic ignition kit on his front distributor 8N and loves it. Everytime I have to take my front distributor off he rides me about putting electronic ignition in. He's almost got me convinced to part with the $ for one.

This is off of Genesee Products website. As you can see they are making front mount kits on a special order basis. Suprised me as I looked into this a while back and they wasn't being made.

Ford used its own distributor on most models. Conversion kits are available for the 8N side mount, NAA, and 600-4000 series four cylinder engines. "Conversions are also available for the early N-series front mount distributors on a special order basis." Contact Genesee Products at (918) 274-8000 for details

Maybe I'm wrong, he may have a side-mount distributor. I thought it was front mount. I'll check, and if it is front, I'll try to list his source.

I like points you can see what is wrong with them and jerry rig them if you have to. They have worked for 50 years why change now. Very seldom do I ever have any problems if I put them in. Mark H.

I have no complaints about breaker points but I recently purchased an electronic ignition system after rebuiding my distributor. I have a small ranch and when I need to use my tractor, I want it to start. The problem I had with points is that they get corroded or burn out and I have to clean and reset them. With an electronic ignition, that problem is eliminated. Plus my engine starts in a quarter turn and idles smoother than if ever did with regular points. The main question that I have is how long will the electronic ignition last. I haven't heard of people on this forum with electronic ignitions complain about them "burning out" early - yet!

I've used electronic ignitions in a few of my cars over the years and never had a problem with any of them. Better spark too.

They are pretty good for the cars not realy much to do to them anymore. Just put plugs in every 50,000 miles or more. I have not had to do anything to my points in my working tractor for 2 years and have not had a problem with it. Come to think about it I have only had to clean the fuel filter a couple of times and add a little oil to the engine. Mark H.
