Adapt a 12 volt generator from a later model ford tractor to fit the 8N? Anyone ever done this? It seems to me that a 12 volt generator conversion would be a lot easier than an alternator conversion. Just curious----Rob

The air cooled VW parts you have laying around work well. The 12V VW generator and VR make a guick and easy conversion. The round band mount VW generator is easily adapted to the existing 8N mount. Use of the VW VR provides easy one wire to battery.amp gauge or wireing terminal. The adjustable VW pully makes adapting to the wider 8N belt a matter of moving a few shims. You do wind up with the fan end of the generator shaft sticking out or you can cut it off. VW generator is 35 amp. I have been running this on My NAA for over 15 years and don't anticipate problems for the rest of my life. While you are at it stick on one of those VW coils and be done with all the ballast resistor/volt drop mess.Nice set of Bosch plug wires will be good to. My NAA/VW system will idle at 12V with 4 lights and 2 flashers going and no battery. Will also roll start with no battery. Suggest changing from amp. to voltmeter for better overall system monitering and if you want to add Iiot light just go form green wire terminal on VR to light to ground and you set. Good luck.

Buck that sounds like a good setup.I have owned 3 VWs and have one now.I have never thought of that, also VW parts are easy to get and not expensive. The fan shaft end should be easy to cut off,Just think how many of those things are around, lots of folks would be willing to give away.If my 12 volt ever gives trouble I think I will go that route including the plugs and coil.Thanks....R.M. Yep that is how my NAA wound up with VW parts. I worked on VW's and had skads of very good parts that you coundn't give away so when the old NAA I used as a VW wrecker and driveway grader needed a charging system it just seemed natural to put is some of the VW parts. While I don't advocate someone running out and buying these particular parts for their old tractor I do recommend their use if you have them lying around.Of course I have often thought that a nice N with a 60 horse VW would make one heck of a lawnmower also--maby someday. Have fun

Thanks Buck!!

It's been a while, you wouldn't happen to have a wiring diagam would you? No rush, when you have time, just e-mail it to me. Thanks a lot!!---Rob

Df on gen to Df on VR , D+ on gen to D+ on VR , Brown ground on gen to ground on VR. From large double pole on VR go to batttery, amp gauge, etc. For Idiot light come off green pole ( small pole beside double large pole). If you want to add accessories like lights, radio, ignition switch just pull off the second lug of the large double pole.Don't have an actual diagram but all the parts are marked.

Rob,

Dell is right, You need some design skills to marry a voltage regulator to a generator and have it work right. The alternator is the way to go.

I had the 10SI on mine and although it worked well, I hated that big old thing hanging out of the side. So I adapted a Japanese marine alternator to mine. It is only a 20 amp unit but that is fine if you dont run lights. It is just as small in diameter as the original generator but only about 4 inches long. It worked out great. Very unobtrusive but works for me. Go with an alternator with a built in regulator and you cant go wrong.

""""It is only a 20 amp unit but that is fine if you dont run lights""""

What makes you think you can't run lights on a 20 amp 12v alternator? A 6v genny that puts out less than 20 amps runs lights?

Lets say you have two front headlights @ 55w each, and a rear worklight @ 55w... figure in 4 amps for ignition, and you get 17.8 amps.. still some left over for slow charge.. assuming max output...

Your 6 volt genny can be worked over to make it a 12 volt. With a few other changes that can make a nice conversion and still look original.

Rob..... ...yes, you can addapt ennythang to ennythang with enuff money and time.

Besides being more EFFICENT, the commonly used Delco 10-SI alternator has BUILT-IN voltage regulator.

You need a matching voltage regulator to whatever 12 volt gennerator you decide to use. This becomes a PROBLEM for the electrically challenged. NOT ALL v/r's are the same in eather physical size or mounting scheme, OR ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS.

Theres a really good reason all automobiles and trucks use alternators..... ....respectfully, Dell

Point well taken Dell. I was mainly thinkin about the stockpile of old air cooled VW parts I have laying around, and the thought of getting creative came over me. There is nothing wrong with my 6 volt system, so I think I'll leave well enough alone. I was just curious really. Thanks again----Rob

I looked at an 8n with this exact same setup.. but I doubt it was from another ford tractor.. it was a large delco genny.. had strange brackets.. and was a bit cobbled.. but looked like all was in order.. So yes.. it is possible..

Rob - send me an email at d.degroot at verizon dot net, there is a new source for exactly this conversion - specifically designed for the 8N.

Good luck,
Dan

Durn, I am looking for the link somewhere on here that had to instructions for checking the output of the alternator. And how to trouble shoot the problem, voltage regulator, etc etc.

I saw it, but durn if I can find it.

Mind is not putting out anymore, just 12.5V sitting or running.

Who has that link please? can email link to me if you want. txhotair@surfbest.net

Thanks guys!!
