Hey guys! I just read the post below about secuing an N to a trailer and it sparked a few questions for you guys in particular, but I'm sure others have opinions that I would be happy to entertain. First off, Dell, I see that you mentioned that you use a Dodge turbo diesel 3/4 ton truck. How do you like it? I have a 99 Chevy silverado 1500 series 1/2 ton pick-up, and I hate it. It won't be too much longer before I trade it in and I was wondering if you would recomend Dodge? I have test driven them and liked how they ride, but I also test drove the Nissan Titan and Really Really liked it, but I am skiddish about the first production year of any vehicle. I REALLY REALLY value your opinion, and would be interested to hear your thoughts. I want a truck that is capable of towing my 8N and anything else heavy duty I have to throw a it.

John PA- I know that you have been keeping up on my progress of the repair to the ECBM on my 99 Silverado, and just wanted to let you know that I was unable to get it off of the truck without having to drop the whole assembly, which would mean that I would have to go through the wacky brake bleeding process that the manufacturer (sp?) recomends. SOOOOO I am gonna suck it up and take it to the shop tonight and have them fix it. They quoted me 675 bucks for the repair, which is about 100 bucks cheaper than the dealer. I hate it, but I am tired of messing with it. Also the state safety inspection has run out.

General Question--My sister lives about 5 hours from me and wants me to come and bring my 8n and do some bush hogging for her. Do you guys think that the car trailers that u-haul rents would be adequate for pulling the 8N? Also, is the silverado enough truck to pull it? I putalmost 3000 pounds of 80# baggs of concrete in the bed this past weekend and it hauled it no problem, so I think pulling an 8N would be easy enough, but I always like to double check. Thanks for the input!!----Rob

Drove about five hours to get my 2N. Rented a car trailer from Ahern rentals. Drove up to 80 mph and not a twitch. My truck is an F-350 diesel and we had no problems. Hardly knew it was back there. Just dont chain to the drawbar hitch. I did and bent the leveling and stationary arms. Good Luck, Dave

Rob..... ...I haven't test drove the 3rd generation Dodge Cummins Diesel (I'm not too impressed with the smudged grill) I'm impressed with the 24 valve 350hp? 600ft/lbs torque HD Cummins and 6-speed tranny. (kinda wish I was money foolish enuff for an engine/tranny transplant into my 1995) I got the autotranny because of the ex-wife and the 5-speed tranny had "issues".

I put 150K miles on my 2nd gen 1995 4-speed automatic behind the 175hp engine before it was overhauled. I wouldn't have overhauled it then but they opened it up to adjust the bands and while there was NO CHUNKS OF METAL, it did show typical 150K wear and I was going on a trip and $2500 later, I was on the road 3-days behind schedule. They did install up-graded parts to withstand the Diesel Torque. A dealer installed tranny wouldn't have had the up-graded parts.

I'm notta fan of 4-door or clubcabs or 6 people carrying pickups. I want an 8' bed to haul plywood panels, fenceposts, campers. Iff'n I need to haul people, I have my 1973 BMW Baveria, an autobahn cruzer and iff'n I need performance, I have my 1969 BMW 2002 with non-stock 165hp engine. But with diesel now selling for more than $2/gal, I'm gonna resurrect my 45mpg Volkswagon Diesel Pick'em-ups.

Tell U-Haul yer haulin' an old Ford Convertable, that weighs less than 3000#. Their 14' auto-haulers do quite nicely..... ...Dell

Also not Dell or John.. but here's my .02

A car hauler has the weight requirement for the N.. but getting uhaul to give it to you is the trick.. some don't like renting to haul ag equipment..( don't tell them? )

I have a dodge 1500 with the v8 magnum.. 5.9L.. ( thats a 360 for you evil steve! )
I pull a 16' tandem axle wood deck with e-brakes.
My N doesn't even feel like anything is back there. I pull my diesel Nh 1920 and 5' hog alot around on it.. that feels like something back there.. but the 5.9l takes it in stride. I use the overdrive cutout feature for towing the big loads.

For what it's worth.. My wifes (cough!) Yukon XL with 5.3L Pulls nearly as good... in fact ride is better on that long yukon.. and power is almost nearly the same..

However my brothers silverado ( engine? ) pulls terrible...???

... either of my esteemed colleages, but I habe some experience on your questions.

First, I drag Chigger all over the place with my '01 Silverado with the 327 CID engine (I don't do liters) AND with an '03 6-cyl 4-Runner. I use a 16" angle iron tandem axle trailer rated for 7000 pounds. BUT, I run premium in my tanks when I pull that kind of load and just use common sense when going over hills, when stopping, following other vehicles, etc.

Uhaul has trialers that should b fine provided you also use tandem axle trailers with brakes and proper laod ratings AND that you strap that tractor in place very well AND check it at every stop on your 5 hour trip.

Well,I ain't Dell either, but I'll throw my opinion out there.. I too have a Dodge with the Cummins Turbo Diesel, they are a great truck, stay away from the automatics though. They have "issues". My 4x4 ex. cab dually will get 15 mph all day long pulling #8000.. Their trailers should be fine,as long as it's got 2 axles,it don't take much to carry your #2500 lb. N tractor.

Tim
