Mid-Kansas auction report

90-yr old guy kept one for hisself and one for his neice and had 16 N's auction today. Auctioneer said bid because 'bidder #1' down in Oklahoma had a floor bid in. If price drops to floor then all of the remainder go to Ok at that price.
Bidding open at 1800 and first one sold for 26 and change. Second one sold at 18 and change. 3rd one no bid at 18, no bid at 1775 and the auctioneer then announced sold them all to 'bidder #1.' 10 8N's went to Oklahoma.
The 4 9N/2N's went around 1500 to 1800 even the one that didn't run. It was a good looking pristine tractor thought. Single rib tires on the front. Looked all original and low hours to me.
16 of them ran and only one looked rough at all but it wasn't leaking much if anything. New hood and paint at it was good looking. (Not sure what it sold for, maybe less than 15; just don't know.) Didn't see any smoke or hear any scary noises. The 3 or 4 I personally put through the paces were fine; started good, charged, lift worked, oil pressure....
Me, I got a 70%, no surface cracks rear tire on a rusty rim for $25. That's half what a 10% no crack tire goes for round here.
BTW, those 9N/2N's had the spacers on the king pin like the 8N book shows. You guys with 9N/2N's should get that 3/4" spacer behind the axle (3/4" x 1/8" steel flat (or a bit thinner) bent around the king pin w/bushing, ends cut at 45-degrees, and with about a 1/8" to 3/16" gap) and a few 0.10" spacers (machinery bushings from spring & axle shop) in front of the axle as needed to keep that axle plumb and to prevent it from sliding back and forth banging into radiator outlet bibs and distributor caps. Makes the axle bushing wear evenly and prevents the steering wheel from suddenly jerking around to rip off your thumb when you hit a bump or dip.

Rob thanks for the report. Sounds like they went for less than we pay out here, particularly as clean as you describe them. Most ours out here that I'm aware of are working tractors, not necessarily pretty, and sell for more than that when they come on the market.

You'ld have to call all of those 'working tractors' based on the condition because none of them had been really dolled-up restored. Lot of them didn't need restored though, just a paint job is all. He might have done some painting 30-40 years ago.
There were a few broken lift arms welded up by some farmer and the like but pretty solid and at least fair tractors but that one with rough sheet metal. The old boy knew not to buy junk is what. The price was pretty close to 'private sale' price around here. A new paint job and the right car lot might get you $3,500. My neighbor paid $3,500. He don't seem to have a lot of sense though. I've seen a retired dealer N mechanic down in Wichita advertise an 8N with a bunch of impliments for $5,000 and I imagine he made it a good to excellent tractor. Don't know it he got it.
Guy should find a working N for $1500 to $2600 anyday around here.

Rob..... ..sounds like there's gonnna be a buncha $2500+ N-Tractors for sale in Oklahoma. I always feel emotional for an old seller of such a collection. Worth so much more in his mind than the auction market. This always happens when you "flood the market", yet sometimes you don't have an "option" for more honest value disposal. I just hope the old gentleman remembers the good times..... ....Dell, thanks for report

The ol' boy is 90-years old, he's done with those old tractors anyway. He didn't do too bad.
If he had a few years or reached out with the internet he might have done better. Lot of work. It would take a lot of years to move that collection for more money around here because everyone expects to buy an N for less than $2,000; $2,600 for a good to excellent. Not many pay more.
He had to love em though! He kept one and he can talk N's with his niece.
