My problem started with a flat tire on a 1946 2N working tractor. As long as I had to pull the tire, why not fix the brakes that never worked (I bought it about 3 years ago the maintain a long gravel drive). Thanks to this site, I ordered the manuals suggested. I am still waiting for the I&T FO-4, but thought I'd ask you experts some questions. When I pulled the rear axle and inspected the drums, I found lots of oil covering the drum and shoes. I therefore assumed the seals were bad. The first manual I got shows the 8N - didn't help me at all. Hope the FO-4 has more info. I read the archive stuff and I think the Sure Seals may be the way to go. What do you think? But, if the bearing is bad (it seems okay - not to sloppy), how would you get the seal and bearing off the axle. It looks pressed on. Is there a puller that fits on the differential end of the axle, or do you head down the the machine shop and use some kind of press. And if you replace it, how do you get it pressed back on? Back to the shop? Thought I'd get some advice while waiting for the manual.

Thanks
BOB L.

The f-04 will show you how to replace the bearing,it uses a shrink fit collar to hold it in place.I used sure seals to fix my leaky 2n,one worked the other did not, after tearing into it again I found one seal in crooked, put in a new seal making sure it was in evenly, cleaned my brake shoes with brake cleaner,no more leaks. The original shoes where soaking in oil for so long the lining had ripped free of the rivets.HTH
