This is my first tractor, 9N, 12volt conversion, front mount coil. I got it 2 years ago, about 3 months ago it started to act up on me and eventually die. Of course I thought the obvious, GAS PROBLEM, well that ain't it! I have done everything from clean out the tank to a carb kit. it has plenty of gas. I was told since it wasn't a gas problem, then a points problem.I took the coil off and took it to work and had those high dollar electricians ohm it, said it was good. well I bought the tuneup kit and put on points.wont start at all now.( go figure) my question is, I am trying to time it. my manual more or less shows me how but what about the camshaft. it has a groove in it just like the back side of the shaft on the distributor, do I have to line those two up? From my understanding I don't, it will automatically do it. is this right? I couldn't find any other info about the timing, also do I have to have the #1 piston up? (yes, I believe but not sure). any help would be great thanks Bert

Bert..... ....yer 2-bolt off-set tang driven frontmount 4-nipple distributor is timed on the kitchen table. 1/4" gap. Its so eazy iff'n ya gottza picture.

Installation, because of the "off-set tang" can NOT be miss-installed/outta time. Well, someguys use a BIG HAMMER and install it backwards. You just gently install the 2-bolts and then rotate the distributor rotor button until it drop into the camshaft notch. Then tighten the 2-bolts.

WARNING: ohmmeters ain't gonnna tell ya yer squarecan ignition coil is good or bad. (its a technical thing)

tip: gently stretch yer coils springy-thingy for better points contact.

But I'd almost bett on yer ignition coil being BAD..... ...Dell, the self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thanks Yall, I am off to get my baby running once again! :) and here's hopen it ain't the coil. but from what I have been reading it most likely is. if I can get it started again I can let it run for abit and see if it dies on me again, then I'll know fer sure..... coil.
