the driving slot for the distributor is to one side on the shaft. Assemble the entire unit then line up the slot and hold it in place .Do not pull it in with the bolts. When you have it lined up right it will mate fully with all surfaces and fit very snug..Then tighten the bolts. I also suggest that you install a spark intensifier circuit for easy starting in bad wet weather..

What is this spark intensifier of which you speak? The only time I ever had a wet start problem is when I pressure washed mine. It sits out side 24/7 and I have started it with the front of the engine covered with snow many times.

Rob..... ...because your frontmount distributor is driven by an "off-set tang" scheme, you don't need to look at your pistons to know iff'n #1 is TDC. Simply start your distributor's 2-bolts and gently turn your distributor's rotor until the tang drops into the notch..... .vola'..... installed correctly. Simple, eh?..... ....respectfully, Dell

It can only go one way. You can force the distributor another way but you will break it.
Set the distributor up in there and slowly rotate the rotor until you feel it slip in the slot. Moderate pressure will fully set the distributor into it's mount. If you can't get it that way then pull the distributor out and make sure the all mating surfaces are clean and everything fits and is fully seated and try again.
DO NOT use the two mounting bolts to pull it together.
Also make sure both ends of the wire bail are fully seated into the distributor before you install the distributor. You should compare one side to the other and get it right or the bail will be cockeyed and so will the coil. You might want to remove the bail and reinstall it just to satisfy yourself that both ends are fully seated and in there just right. Just a tiny bit cockeyed is enough to give you some problems down the road, especially with moisture getting past the gasket.

It can actually only go on one way - the tangs on the distributor are offset slightly, they did this for a reason. If you lightly press the distributor to the cam, then turn the rotor, the distributor will drop into place when the tangs line up with the cam correctly. Holding it into place with one hand, put the two screws on and tighten finger tight to hold it in place. Do not force it on, it will drop easily into place when it is aligned.

Good luck,
Dan
